According to the Orlando Sentinel, the Magic will return soon to a traditional front-office chain of command when they hire one man to be the general manager.

Two seasons ago, the Magic promoted a hockey guy (John Weisbrod) to run the club.

When Weisbrod exited, they split the GM job this season between Weisbrod's right-hand men, Otis Smith and Dave Twardzik, who were handed titles of assistant general managers.

Either Smith or Twardzik -- or somebody from outside the organization -- will get the job.

"I think it's clear we get a GM in here," Magic President Bob Vander Weide told the Sentinel.

"Could it be one of those guys [Smith or Twardzik]? Absolutely."

Vander Weide said he hopes to have a GM in place before the NBA draft "by May 1 or May 15."

However it plays out for Smith and Twardzik, Vander Weide said, "My intention is not to lose either guy.

"I'm happy with what they've done. There was a lot of debate about having two assistant GMs. We took a few hits on that. I noticed nobody throws arrows at baseball teams who have been doing it."
