Matisse Thybulle, Lakers Agree To One-Year, $3.3M Deal

Jul 20, 2026 2:24 PM

Matisse Thybulle and the Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to a one-year, $3.3 million contract.

Thybulle is coming off his three-year, $33 million contract with the Portland Trail Blazers that was originally signed as a restricted free agent offer sheet with the Dallas Mavericks in 2023 that was matched. Luka Doncic was with the Mavericks when Thybulle signed the offer sheet.

Thybulle appeared in 30 games last season with the Blazers, averaging 5.8 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals as one of the NBA's best wing defenders.

Thybulle missed most of the 2024-25 season due to right knee tendinopathy.

The Lakers currently have 16 players on guaranteed contracts for the 2026-27 season, which will necessitate additional roster maneuvers before the start of the regular season.

Mavericks Sign Jett Howard To Two-Way, Waive Tyler Smith

Jul 20, 2026 10:38 PM

The Dallas Mavericks have signed Jett Howard to a two-way contract. To create the roster spot, the Mavericks have waived Tyler Smith from his two-way contract.

Howard appeared in 55 games last season with the Orlando Magic, averaging 5.5 points and 1.6 rebounds while shooting 37.2 percent on three-pointers in 12.6 minutes. Howard was the 11th overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft out of Michigan. The Magic declined to pick up their fourth year option on Howard last October, which set him up for unrestricted free agency this offseason.

Smith appeared in 12 games last season with the Mavericks, averaging 4.7 points and 2.8 rebounds in 13.8 minutes. Smith was also on a two-way contract with the Houston Rockets last season but didn't appear in any games.

Jonathan Kuminga's Talks With Lakers Stall Over Contract

Jul 20, 2026 12:47 PM

Talks between the Los Angeles Lakers and free agent Jonathan Kuminga have stalled, with both sides far apart on contract terms, according to team sources. The Athletic has reported on the Lakers' interest in Kuminga since late June, but the team has shown little motivation to commit significant draft capital toward a sign-and-trade to complete a deal.

Despite the stalled momentum, Kuminga remains viewed as the top remaining upside play on the free agent market and could re-emerge as a Lakers target if his market stays cool. League sources indicated the Cleveland Cavaliers are the team most frequently connected to Kuminga aside from the Lakers. The Cavaliers are awaiting a decision from LeBron James before possibly pivoting to Kuminga.

The Atlanta Hawks previously declined their $24.3 million team option on Kuminga for the 2026-27 season. He played last season on a $22.5 million contract following a prolonged restricted free agency process with the Golden State Warriors.

The Lakers have also shown interest in free agent Matisse Thybulle, a top-tier defensive wing who has developed into an effective catch-and-shoot threat during his time with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Sources also indicated the Lakers continue monitoring the market for size at center. The team already acquired Walker Kessler via sign-and-trade and signed Kevon Looney to bolster that position, with Sandro Mamukelashvili also capable of playing center.

Trey Murphy Trade Talks Could Pick Up After LeBron James' Decision

Jul 20, 2026 1:19 PM

The New Orleans Pelicans could revisit Trey Murphy trade scenarios after LeBron James decides which team he will play for this upcoming season. The Pelicans listened to trade offers around the draft but maintained a high asking price for Murphy.

"Chatter about a Trey Murphy trade, while lessened, hasn’t vanished and is one of many potential pieces of league business that could resurface once LeBron James’ next destination becomes clear," writes John Hollinger at The Athletic.

Murphy, who averaged 21.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists across 66 games last season while shooting 37.9 percent from three-point range, is under contract through the 2029 offseason on a four-year, $112 million deal. He will earn $27 million next season.

The Pelicans selected Derik Queen and Jeremiah Fears in the first round last season and represent their youth movement. But the Pelicans also retain mid-career veterans such as Murphy, Zion Williamson, Dejounte Murray and Herb Jones.

Blazers, City Of Portland Remain Far Apart On Arena Funding Deal

Jul 20, 2026 12:01 PM

The Portland Trail Blazers and the city of Portland remain significantly apart over public funding for renovations to the Moda Center, according to a team source. The disagreement centers on a term sheet the city sent Friday outlining a proposed 20-year lease agreement.

"I think we are very far apart," said the source, one of two Blazers officials granted anonymity to discuss the situation.

Under the proposed terms, the Blazers would receive $600 million in public funding in exchange for paying $3 million annually toward a property tax offset, an amount that would increase over time. The deal would also require the team to hire union workers and accept caps on cost overruns.

"The term sheet is a non-starter," said the source. "I don't know why they sent it to us, because they know very little of the stuff we would agree to. They are playing politics at this point."

The Blazers' board is scheduled to meet Monday to determine next steps. The city plans to vote on the funding package Aug. 12, with an agreement needing to be finalized by Dec. 31 to preserve $365 million in committed state funding.

The team's lease at the Moda Center runs through 2030, adding uncertainty about whether new owner Tom Dundon might eventually consider relocating the franchise. Two high-ranking Blazers sources said Dundon has never raised that possibility.

"No one with the Blazers has ever said we want to move," said a team source. "We don't want that. We want to stay in Portland."

Tensions have grown between the organization and city officials, with some council members accusing the Blazers of withholding renovation details. City councilor Mitch Green criticized the team's approach.

"I think the Blazers have been behaving poorly," said Green. "They thought because they passed the state legislature that the deal was done. But we have a set of councilors who are asking tough questions."

The Blazers maintain their reluctance to share detailed plans stems from the early-stage nature of their renovation concepts and lingering frustration over a June threat from councilor Steve Novick to sue the team over the arena's condition.

"We don't even want to respond to the term sheet until they remove that gun to our head," said a source.

Renovation concepts under consideration include a new north-side atrium entrance, additional kitchens across the arena's three levels, and updated club-level seating.

Green said the council needs greater clarity before moving forward.

"We need to see a scope and scale of what this money is paying for," said Green. "You've got a city council that is not a rubber-stamp council... those are the conditions (the Blazers) face."

The Blazers believed they had reached an agreement in March after securing the state's $365 million commitment, contingent on the city releasing $120 million and Multnomah County contributing $88 million. A second Blazers source expressed frustration with how the situation has evolved.

"They have made this a bit of a political football," said the source. "They're asking for things that change the deal dramatically."

City spokesman Elliott Kozuch confirmed momentum existed in March but said formal council approval was always required beyond an initial understanding, adding that the Blazers have shared only high-level concepts so far.

A Blazers source said the team has begun studying other recent NBA arena deals and may push for improved terms going forward.

"The city's delay has given us time to study what a market deal is," said the source. "The $600 million deal that was supposed to be done six months ago was a way-below-market deal."

Green said he remains unmoved by the possibility of relocation.

"If he moves the team, it's because he thinks he can get a better deal," said Green. "Right now, it's a matter of $120 million. If Dundon came out today and said 'I'm gonna pick up the tab on the $120 [million]'... that would probably get us to the finish line tomorrow."

Luka Doncic: I Think We Have A Really Good Team, Excited To Start New Season

Jul 20, 2026 1:25 PM

Luka Doncic spoke optimistically about the Los Angeles Lakers' roster during an interview over the weekend with the Golf Channel while he was attending the British Open.

The Lakers acquired Walker Kessler in a sign-and-trade with the Utah Jazz that cost the team two future first round picks outright and two first round swaps. The Lakers believe Kessler is the best two-way center Doncic has ever played with. The addition of Kessler and new rotation pieces such as Sandro Mamukelashvili, Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton came at the expense of losing LeBron James.

"I think we have a really good team," Doncic said. "I'm very excited to start a new season. Obviously last season didn't end how we wanted, so I'm very excited for the new one."

When Doncic led the Dallas Mavericks to the 2024 Finals, he was paired with Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively splitting time at center.

Last August, Doncic signed a three-year, $165 million extension with the Lakers that contained a player option for 2028. Doncic can sign a four-year extension during the 2027 offseason.

Sam Presti Describes Lu Dort Trade As 'Financial Decision'

Jul 21, 2026 1:58 AM

Oklahoma City Thunder executive vice president and general manager Sam Presti described the team trading Lu Dort to the Chicago Bulls as a "financial decision."

"This was a financial decision. The impression I have been given is that the savings generated this summer, and from being out of the tax the last several years, will be re-allocated to future teams," said Presti on Monday.

The Thunder acquired three second-round picks in exchange for Dort.

Presti also mentioned Ajay Mitchell and Cason Wallace as having an opportunity to grow without Dort.

"Losing Lu will certainly have an effect on the team, but I think we are positioned well to reimagine ourselves and continue to find new avenues to win. Cason (Wallace) and Ajay (Mitchell) will have more responsibility, as will others," added Presti.

Dort averaged 8.3 points and 3.5 rebounds last season for the Thunder.
