Brian Shaw says he didn't want to rush into his first head coaching job, which is one of the reasons he didn't end up replacing Mike Brown in Cleveland.

The Cavaliers wanted a head coach in place by July 1, the start of free agency.

"They wanted to have a coach in place by the start of free agency," Shaw said. "They wanted that coach to help recruit LeBron (James). I wasn't going to be able to meet that timetable."

For now, he remains on Phil Jackson's staff in Los Angeles.

"I think I was in the running and in the final two," Shaw said. "It's unfortunate for Cleveland and their fans that things didn't work out like they thought it would, with LeBron leaving.

"It was still a great opportunity for me. I have nothing but good things to say about the whole process."

Cleveland hired Byron Scott on July 1.
