The Boston Celtics and Marcus Smart were unable to agree upon a contract extension before Monday's deadline.
The two sides were reportedly close to a deal but Smart will instead become a restricted free agent in 2018.
Boston's concerns over the luxury tax contributed to their inability to agree upon a deal.
"It will cost them a lot more next year," Happy Walters said told Mark Murphy of the Boston Herald.
