One of the four return-to-play plans discussed by the NBA's Board of Governors was one in which teams that are within six games of a playoff spot would be invited to compete in regular season games and then a play-in tournament for the final playoff sports. There would then be a play-in tournament for the final playoff spots.

There have also been scenarios involving 20 teams in a Group State format, which would include the Portland Trail Blazers, New Orleans Pelicans, Sacramento Kings and San Antonio Spurs.

If the NBA uses the six-game threshold plan, then the Washington Wizards and Phoenix Suns would also be invited to participate.
