Teams are playing 3.6 games per week this season, compared to 3.42 per week last season, and taking 15 percent fewer flights, according to data provided by the league.

“The injury rate for this season is in line with data from the previous five seasons, including a 6 percent reduction from last season,” said an NBA spokesman to the New York Times.

Of the top-eight teams in the NBA based on record, only two were not dealing with major injuries in the Utah Jazz and Phoenix Suns.

Multiple teams that the New York Times spoke to asserted that the density of the season and daily COVID-19 testing have cut into the rest time of players and therefore have increased the injury risk.

Jamal Murray became the fourth player to tear his ACL this season. The NBA has averaged approximately three ACL tears per season since 05-06, according to data maintained by Jeff Stotts.

“We are still in the collecting phase regarding the effects of the compressed schedule at this point of the year,” Stotts said. “I am concerned we will see more soft-tissue injuries here in April. They appear to be on the rise from the rest of the season.”
