Golden State Warriors center Kristaps Porzingis is unlikely to play Saturday night at the Atlanta Hawks after leaving Friday's road loss at the Detroit Pistons with lower back spasms. The 33-year-old said postgame he will "probably" miss the matchup against the Hawks, the team that traded him to Golden State in February.
"We'll see," Porzingis said. "Maybe it loosens up tomorrow. Who knows? But right now it's pretty stiff."
Porzingis first felt his back tighten in the first quarter but the problem worsened late in the second following back-to-back physical exchanges with Pistons center Jalen Duren. On his final possession, Porzingis leaped for an errant pass while Duren pushed from behind. Upon landing, he grabbed at his lower back and asked out of the game. The team ruled him out at halftime.
Porzingis had played in six of Golden State's previous eight games and scored 11, 17, 20 and 30 points across four straight appearances. After Wednesday's loss at the Boston Celtics, he estimated he was 60% of his normal self and needed only a few more games to find full rhythm.
"I would say I'm pretty good at managing it, keeping my back strong," Porzingis said. "Little tight now. Once I cool down, it'll tighten up more."
The injury adds to a difficult stretch for Golden State, which has dropped seven of its last eight games and committed a season-high 27 turnovers Friday.
