Paul Mokeski Will Be Named Head Coach Of Reno Bighorns

Paul Mokeski will be named head coach of the Reno Bighorns of the D-League.

"I would love the opportunity to be a head coach in the DLeague and am hoping to get interviews with a few teams this summer," Mokeski told Schroeder earlier in the search process. "I would like the chance to continue to teach players and help them accomplish their dream of playing in the NBA."

Mokeski played 12 seasons in the NBA and has been an assistant in both the NBA and D-League.

Eric Musselman left the Bighorns to become head coach of the D-Fenders.

Dakota Wizards Hire Potapenko As Assistant Coach

The Dakota Wizards have hired Vitaly Potapenko as the team’s assistant coach, the team announced today. Potapenko will serve under newly hired Head Coach Nate Bjorkgren for the 2011-12 season.

Potapenko brings two years of coaching experience to the Wizards, having most recently served as an assistant coach for the Indiana Pacers this past season. In Indiana, under Head Coach Jim O’Brien and Interim Head Coach Frank Vogel, Potapenko helped lead the Pacers to a 37-45 record and a trip to the 2011 NBA Playoffs.

Prior to joining the Pacers, Potapenko served as an assistant coach for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA Development League under Head Coach Joey Meyer during the 2009-10 season.

Anthony Mason Jr. Signs With Sioux Falls

The Sioux Falls Skyforce announced today that Anthony Mason, Jr. has signed a contract with the NBA Development League and will report to training camp with the Skyforce in early November.

Mason, Jr. averaged 15.1 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 14 games (all starts) with the Skyforce last season before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury. He participated in training camp with the Miami Heat last fall and averaged 4.3 points and 4.3 rebounds in three preseason games. The 6-7, 215-pound forward was named All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention following his junior season at St. John’s after averaging a team-high 14.0 points and 4.4 rebounds.

The Nets have reached agreement with Bob MacKinnon Jr. to coach the Springfield Armor of the D-League, according to sources.

Springfield is the D-League affiliate of the Nets.

Kirk Lacob Named GM Of Dakota Wizards

Kirk Lacob, director of basketball operations for the Warriors, has been named general manager of the Dakota Wizards.

The Warriors own the Wizards of the D-League.

Kirk Lacob is the 23-year-old son of co-owner Joe Lacob.

Kirk Lacob brought basketball and statistical smarts with out-of-the-box thinking to the Warriors' front office, according to team sources.

Dakota Wizard To Hold Open Tryout In Bay Area

The Dakota Wizards, the NBA Development League affiliate of the Golden State Warriors, will hold an Open Tryout for the upcoming 2011-12 season on Saturday, October 15, at Dream Courts in Hayward, CA, it was announced today. The tryouts are scheduled to run from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., with registration beginning at 8:00 a.m.

The participation fee to secure a spot in the tryouts is $125 if paid by September 23, and increases to $150 for applications submitted after September 23 and for walkups.

“These are the opportunities that make dreams come true,” said Jim Weyermann, President of the Dakota Wizards. “I have personally watched young players enter the various developmental leagues in basketball/baseball and end up playing for a Championship. You simply never know what you will find in an open tryout situation.”

Will Voigt To Remain Head Coach Of Bakersfield Jam

Will Voigt will return for his third season as the Bakersfield Jam Head Coach in 2011-12, the team announced today. In his second season with the Bakersfield Jam, Coach Voigt led the Jam to recognition as the NBA Development League’s biggest turnaround of the 2010-11 campaign.

“Will is an asset to our basketball team and our community. He has built an incredible infrastructure for our organization and important relationships with our Jam partners. We are excited about the upcoming season and we believe that Will has positioned our team for continued success on and off the court,” said Bakersfield Jam Managing Partner, David Higdon.

After ending the 2009-10 season at 17-33, the Jam compiled a 29-21 regular season record last year. The best season to date in the franchise’s five-year history, the team also made their second franchise playoff appearance and earned their first franchise playoff win.

“Stan Ellis and David Higdon are wonderful people to work for,” said Coach Voigt. “They have worked hard to provide our players the best facilities in the D-League, and I am grateful to return as their head coach. I look forward to continuing our success from last season.”

The Reno Bighorns have been purchased by a local group led by Reno lawyer Herb Santos Jr.

The Bighorns were previously owned by SK Baseball, which also owns the Reno Aces.
