Donovan Mitchell Situation Being Closely Watched, Multiple Teams Preparing 'Huge Offer' To Cavs

May 15, 2024 11:40 AM

Donovan Mitchell faces a big decision this offseason when the Cleveland Cavaliers offer him a contract extension. If Mitchell chooses not to extend, a trade becomes possible and there are already several teams closely monitoring the situation due to their interest in acquiring him.

"The NBA, especially beginning with what Donovan says at the end of the season, is paying very close attention because multiple teams would love to make a huge offer to the Cavs if Donovan does not choose to extend his contract," said Brian Windhorst.

Mitchell has been non-committal on his future with the Cavaliers when asked about it during the season. Windhorst added that he doesn't expect Mitchell to explicitly indicate he would prefer to be traded.

The Cavaliers traded for Mitchell before the 21-22 season with the Utah Jazz also receiving interest at that time from teams such as the New York Knicks and Miami Heat. Mitchell can become a free agent in 2024.

"There is an optimism within that organization that they're going to sign him," said Windhorst of the Cavaliers.

"There are a number of teams that have their offers ready," said Windhorst.

"Are the Lakers one?" asked Andraya Carter.

"They're ready, of course," said Windhorst.

"The Knicks?" asked Mike Greenberg.

"I don't think... the Knicks are trying win the Eastern Conference," replied Windhorst. "Certainly across the river there in Brooklyn."

Rockets Offered Nets Their Own Picks Back In Exchange For Suns' Picks

May 13, 2024 5:33 PM

While the Houston Rockets were linked with a trade pursuit of Mikal Bridges back in January, they were also seeking a way to convert some of their future picks into picks that stretch further out into the future.

During that trade discussion, the Rockets offered the Brooklyn Nets their own first round picks back to them in exchange for the picks from the Phoenix Suns.

The Nets declined that scenario as they were pursuing a spot in the playoffs last season.

The Rockets ultimately held onto Brooklyn's pick in the 2024 draft and it moved up in the lottery to No. 3.

Houston could reach out to other teams with a similar stockpile of picks such as the Utah Jazz or the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Rockets traded James Harden to the Nets in 2021 for unprotected first round picks in 2022, 2024 and 2026, along with pick swaps in 2021, 2023, 2025 and 2027. Brooklyn subsequently traded Kevin Durant to the Suns in 2023 for first round picks in 2023, 2025, 2027 and 2029, as well as a pick swap in 2028.

Sean Marks To Return As Nets GM Next Season

Apr 13, 2024 9:05 AM

The Brooklyn Nets have gone through a disappointing season, seeing their streak snapped after five consecutive playoff appearances. However, falling short of the postseason won't cost general manager Sean Marks his job. Marks will return to Brooklyn for the offseason and next season.

Marks' first order of business will be hiring a new head coach. The Nets are expected to undergo a wide-ranging search for their next coach. Brooklyn fired Jacque Vaughn after he got off to a 21-33 start this season. Kevin Ollie replaced Vaughn and has gone 11-16 as Brooklyn's interim head coach.

"Joe and I have always been in complete partnership," Marks said about hiring the next coach and his role in the process. "And it doesn’t mean we always agree. I mean, you have to have good discussions and robust discussions, but Joe and I will make this decision, and he has given me no reason to believe that I won’t be able to make that decision. By the end of this I have no doubt that we’ll come and find the best person fit for this job."

Nets Unlikely To Pursue Buyout With Ben Simmons

Apr 11, 2024 9:47 AM

Ben Simmons has played in only 57 games during his tenure with the Brooklyn Nets. Next season, Simmons will be on an expiring contract worth $40.3 million. That's led to speculation about what Brooklyn might do with Simmons, and his contract, this offseason.

One thing that seems off the table is a buyout. The Nets have given no indication they will look for Simmons to reduce his salary in a move that would send him into free agency.

Instead, Brooklyn is planning for Simmons to be a part of the roster next season. He's undergone successful back surgery, and the hope is that he'll be fine for summer workouts and pickup games.

Dennis Schroder Hopes To Stay With Nets

Apr 11, 2024 9:40 AM

Veteran guard Dennis Schroder has bounced around the NBA in recent years. Now, Schroder is hoping he'll stick with the Brooklyn Nets for a while. Schroder is under contract for just over $13 million for next season. With the Nets rebuilding, that will come with trade speculation.

"Of course. I always want to be stationed somewhere where people show me appreciation," Schroder told The New York Post about wanting to stay in Brooklyn. "And I felt that from the first day — people reaching out to my family, to my wife, to my mom. That shows, OK, they really [want me]. And the playing style, as well, I like. They trust me, in what I am capable of. And of course I want to stay.

"I know the business side of it as well. So, I’m not taking anything emotional or personal. I know how it is. But at the end of the day, of course I want to stay here. I met Joe [Tsai], the owner, his wife, his kid. And of course I want to build something special here. Everything they say, I’m preaching the same thing. And I’m the same player that they’re looking for, and it would be great to stay, for sure."
