Nuggets, J.R. Smith Still Talking Extension

Oct 31, 2007 8:15 AM

Thad Foucher, agent for Nuggets guard J.R. Smith, said he's continuing to have conversations with Nuggets executive Mark Warkentien about a possible contract extension for his client.

Barring an 11th-hour move by Wednesday's deadline, Smith will become a restricted free agent during the offseason. "It'd be fine," Smith said of that prospect. "I just got to play hard this year."

Durant Tests Ankle, May Play In Sonics' Opener

Oct 30, 2007 3:19 AM

Kevin Durant, Seattle's second overall choice, moved fluidly while completing practice Monday, two days before the season opener at Denver. It was the first extensive basketball work for last season's national college player of the year since he sprained his left ankle in a preseason game Oct. 23.

Sonics coach P.J. Carlesimo would not declare Durant ready to start at shooting guard in the nationally televised opener against the Nuggets on Wednesday night. Seattle then has its home opener Thursday night against Phoenix.

"He looked decent. He probably did a little more than probably we thought he'd be able to do," Carlesimo said, after Durant joined Earl Watson, Damien Wilkins, Chris Wilcox and Nick Collison on the first team for a scrimmage that ended practice.

Denver Nuggets' guard Chucky Atkins is expected to miss six to eight weeks after an MRI on Saturday revealed a severe right groin strain.

Atkins, who signed with the Nuggets in July, has been bothered during the preseason by a pulled groin. He left an exhibition game against Phoenix on Thursday with a groin injury.

The eight-year veteran averaged 13.2 points and 4.6 assists with Memphis last season.

Carmelo Thinner From Last Season

Oct 25, 2007 11:58 AM

Physically, Nuggets' forward Carmelo Anthony appears to be great shape. In fact, he said he's down to 8 percent body fat and weighs 228 pounds, down from 234 last season.

"How'd I get there?" he said, smiling. "I've been playing three straight years, nonstop."

Iverson New Addition To Nuggets' Injury List

Oct 25, 2007 6:14 AM

Guard Allen Iverson was injured in practice Wednesday at the Pepsi Center, suffering a left quadriceps contusion when he collided with center Steven Hunter.

"He got kneed in the thigh," coach George Karl said. "Doesn't seem to be anything long term. They said his range of motion was fine."

The initial prognosis on Iverson is day to day, but the injury might shelve him for a preseason game tonight at Phoenix (8 MDT, TNT). It also lengthens a Nuggets' infirmary report that includes big men Kenyon Martin, Nene, Marcus Camby, Eduardo Najera and point guard Chucky Atkins.

The injury to Iverson, who is expected to start at point guard rather than shooting guard, as he did last season, means the Nuggets have no point guards who are 100 percent healthy.

Report: Smith Pushed Woman, Tore Her Dress

Oct 24, 2007 7:31 PM

Denver Nuggets' guard J.R. Smith ran afoul of the law by pouring champagne on a woman at a nightclub, then briefly apologizing before spitting on her, shoving her and tearing her dress, court records show.

The Oct. 13 clash led the Nuggets to suspend Smith for the first three games of the season.

A 22-year-old Englewood woman told police she was at the DC10 club in Denver when Smith poured Moet champagne on her, according to a summons charging the guard with assault, destruction of property, and disturbing the peace.

As the club closed for the night, the woman said Smith "apologized to the victim. Then (he) changed attitude and spit on her, used his hand to push her face and tore her dress," according to the police report.
