Oklahoma City Unveils Plan For New $900M Downtown Arena

Sep 12, 2023 10:29 PM

Oklahoma City unveiled plans for a new downtown arena that will cost a minimum of $900 million.

The Thunder have agreed to play in the arena for at least 25 years. The stadium is scheduled to open by the 2029-30 season.

Thunder ownership will contribute $50 million to the project. Additional funding would be provided by the passage of a one-cent sale tax by city voters on December 12.

"As this very public discussion played out over the last year, the people of Oklahoma City have overwhelmingly expressed to me two desires -- (1) keep the Thunder for as long as possible, and (2) don't raise taxes if it can be avoided. We have accomplished those two priorities with this plan, and it is truly a win-win for all of us," said Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt.

NBA Executives No Longer Think Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Will Request A Trade

Sep 8, 2023 10:22 AM

When Shai Gilgeous-Alexander signed a rookie scale extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder, many NBA executives thought it would be a matter of time before a trade request followed. The Thunder were just starting a multi-year rebuild and were deep into asset-collection mode.

Now, with Oklahoma City rapidly improving, those rival executives have given up hope that Gilgeous-Alexander will ask for a trade. The Thunder were in the Western Conference Play-In Tournament last season and are a trendy pick to make the playoffs outright this season.

Gilgeous-Alexander is coming off an All-NBA season and looks primed to have another big year, coming off a terrific summer playing for Canada at the World Cup. Oklahoma City will also see 2022 second overall pick Chet Holmgren make his debut this season, after missing his rookie year with a foot injury.
