Pascal Siakam, Raptors Eye December 30 As Deadline For Contract Extension

Dec 29, 2023 1:11 AM

The Toronto Raptors and Pascal Siakam see December 30 as a potential deadline to make a decision about a contract extension, sources told Michael Grange of Sportsnet.

A contract extension signed before December 30 would allow the Raptors the flexibility to trade Siakam next summer ahead of free agency.

With Siakam eligible to sign a four-year, $192 million extension, both sides have had discussions over the framework of a new deal since the start of the season.

The Pacers have expressed interest in Siakam, as well as OG Anunoby.

Sixers To Sign Kenneth Lofton Jr To Two-Way Contract; Waive Javonte Smart

Dec 23, 2023 1:32 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers are adding forward Kenneth Lofton Jr. on a two-way contract. To clear room for Lofton, the Sixers are waiving guard Javonte Smart.

Lofton was waived by the Memphis Grizzlies earlier in the week. Memphis needed to create a roster spot when Ja Morant was reinstated from the suspended list.

The 6-foot-6 forward appeared in 39 NBA games with the Grizzlies over the past two seasons. He's averaged 4.1 points in seven minutes per game over that period.

In the G League, Lofton has been a dominant scorer and rebounder. In 32 games over two seasons with the Memphis Hustle, Lofton has averaged 22.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.

Smart appeared in one NBA game for 76ers this season.

Knicks, Dmytro Skapintsev Agree To Two-Way Contract

Dec 23, 2023 9:46 AM

The New York Knicks have agreed to a two-way contract with center Dmytro Skapintsev. New York was looking for additional center depth with both Mitchell Robinson and Jericho Sims out with injuries. They found it with Skapintsev, who has been with the Westchester Knicks of the G League this season.

The 7-foot-1 center has played in 55 games for the G League Knicks over the past two seasons. Skapintsev is averaging 5.9 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 18.6 minutes per game this season.

It was recently reported that New York applied for a Disabled Player Exception for Robinson. That would mean that the Knicks believe their starting center will miss the remainder of the season following ankle surgery. In addition to Robinson being out, Jericho Sims went down with a sprained ankle earlier in the week. That left New York with only Isaiah Hartenstein and the recently added Taj Gibson at the five.

Zion Williamson's Contract No Longer Guaranteed For Final Three Seasons

Dec 21, 2023 2:28 PM

The final three seasons of the contract of Zion Williamson with the New Orleans Pelicans are no longer guaranteed. By missing more than 22 games last season, Williamson triggered a clause in his contract that turns his salary for 25-26, 26-27 and 27-28 from guaranteed to non-guaranteed.

The Pelicans could theoretically waive Williamson after the 24-25 season without any financial ramifications. The odds of that are fairly slim barring an extreme set of circumstances.

The contract also has ways for Williamson to earn back the guarantees by playing in enough games and hitting specific weigh-in checkpoints.

Williamson signed a five-year, $197 million extension with the Pelicans in 2022.

The complex deal, key details of which were confirmed by six league sources on condition of anonymity, contained unusual measures taken by the Pelicans to directly connect guaranteed salary with games played.

Under the contract, the sum of Williamson’s weight in pounds and his body fat percentage must be less than 295. He was listed as weighing 285 pounds last season, meaning his body fat could not be higher than 10 percent.

The Cavs signed Rubio to a three-year, $18.5 million deal in the summer of 2022, while he was nursing a torn ACL suffered in January 2022.
