Pelicans Consider Signing Dante Cunningham

Nov 30, 2014 8:33 PM

The New Orleans Pelicans are strongly considering signing Dante Cunningham.

Cunningham worked out for the Pelicans over the weekend.

The NBA recently suspended Charlotte's Jeffrey Taylor 24 games after he plead guilty in a misdemeanor domestic assault case. Despite charges being dropped against Cunningham, it was immediately unclear if he faced any league discipline.

Cunningham has been working to clear his name with NBA executives since a domestic assault arrest in April in Minneapolis. As a member of the Timberwolves, Cunningham was charged with an assault on his then- girlfriend, but charges were eventually dropped and police found that his accuser’s story included falsehoods.

Isaiah Thomas' First Call In Free Agency Was From Ainge

Nov 30, 2014 2:00 PM

Isaiah Thomas averaged 20.3 points per game last season with the Sacramento Kings and is averaging 15.5 coming off the bench this season for the Phoenix Suns.

“My teammates are good guys, the organization is great, and the style of play is perfect,” Thomas said. “It’s a big reason why I chose here because it favors my strengths, getting up and down, scoring and shooting at will, and using our strength, which is our guards.”

The first call Thomas received when he became a restricted free agent was from Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge.

“It was crazy because I was playing in a basketball game that night, I checked my voice mail and it was Danny Ainge,” he said. “I was tripping because that’s big right there. That’s Danny Ainge, Boston Celtics, all of that. It really hit me like dang, [free agency] is about to start. He sent me a voice mail and sent me a text message. He brought up Avery (Bradley) and all the guys who have been in Boston from the [Seattle/Tacoma] area.”

Joakim Noah's Offseason Knee Surgery More Serious Than Expected

Nov 30, 2014 2:30 AM

Joakim Noah posted 15 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and six blocks in the Chicago Bulls' win over the Boston Celtics on Friday.

Noah is still regaining 100 percent form physically and is confident he will reach that point this season.

"There is no question in my mind — 100 percent — that I can get to where I want to be physically this season," Noah said. "I have to be positive. I know how far I've come just in the last month."

Noah acknowledged the seriousness of the May 2014 knee surgery, which the Bulls originally termed minor and needing an eight- to 12-week rehabilitation period. Both Noah and the Bulls acknowledged on the eve of training camp that a longer recovery period prohibited Noah from playing full court all offseason.

And Noah has remained on minutes restrictions all season.

"It was more than a scope," Noah said. "That's what it was supposed to be. So it definitely took longer than we expected. But it's nothing that I can't recover from and be back 100 percent and be right."

Jeff Adrien Signing With Timberwolves Under Hardship Exception

Nov 29, 2014 4:09 PM

Free agent power forward Jeff Adrien has reached agreement on a contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves under the NBA’s injury hardship exception, league sources told RealGM on Saturday.

With Ricky Rubio, Nikola Pekovic, Kevin Martin and Ronny Turiaf sidelined with injuries, the Timberwolves were granted a short-term exception to sign a 16th player to their roster temporarily and decided upon Adrien.

Adrien has averaged 4.8 points and 4.3 rebounds over four NBA seasons. A 6-foot-7 product who performs beyond his size with activity and athletic ferocity, he has played for Golden State, Houston, Charlotte and Milwaukee. Adrien averaged 10.9 points and 7.8 rebounds in 28 games to close the 2013-14 season with the Bucks.

Adrien, 28, went to training camp with the Rockets in October.

Family Matter Likely To Delay Resolution To Andrei Kirilenko Situation With Nets

Nov 29, 2014 2:17 PM

Andrei Kirilenko's desire to tend to a family matter in New York appears to make a trade from the Brooklyn Nets impractical for the foreseeable future.

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Clippers are two teams with a need for a player like Kirilenko that will need to wait to see if he becomes available close to the deadline.

The Nets have been working to find a team that’ll take the balance of his $3.3 million deal for the 2014-15 season, but a family matter that may require him remaining in New York until January or February could make it difficult for the Nets to trade him soon, sources said.

Kirilenko doesn’t have to accept a contract buyout and cost himself money. He can wait until the February trade deadline and become a low-risk addition elsewhere in the NBA.

“Andrei has all the power now,” one rival executive told Yahoo Sports. “He can say he likes the situation enough to play or not to play.”

Cuban Gave Recommendation To Raptors To Hire Casey

Nov 29, 2014 2:29 AM

The Dallas Mavericks' brass heaped praise on Dwane Casey before the two teams squared off on Friday in Toronto.

Mark Cuban recommended that the Raptors hire Casey shortly after the 2011 NBA Finals run. Casey was an assistant coach on the Mavs' title team.

“I was very complimentary of him to them because of the attention he pays to detail, his understanding of the game, his ability to relate to players, he’s the total package,” Cuban said.

“I think he didn’t get a fair shake where he was as a head coach prior (in Minnesota). I mean, he was the difference-maker for us. We don’t win a championship without him.”

“There were a lot more established coaches that he passed on,” Rick Carlisle added.

“He really targeted Dwane as a guy that he knew could take a group of younger guys, mould them and instill a defensive philosophy and a defensive disposition in how they played. The very first year the record wasn’t great but the defensive numbers did a 180. From there they have built it up each year. Dwane has earned the right to have a team this good and he has done a great job of building it up to this point.”

Gregg Popovich Likely To Return To Spurs Sunday From Minor Procedure

Nov 29, 2014 1:41 AM

Gregg Popovich is likely to return to the San Antonio Spurs' sideline for Sunday's road game against the Boston Celtics.

Ettore Messina has served as head coach in two straight wins as Popovich has been sidelined due to a minor medical procedure.

“We didn’t talk about that but the fact he was here this morning speaks to a very, very good development,” Messina said. “That’s what I assume (that Popovich will return on Sunday). I didn’t talk to him about that, and he didn’t say anything but I assume that he is moving in the right direction so I would not be surprised to see him very, very soon. Also because I don’t think he likes to stay at home and watch the game.”

Popovich participated in preparations for Friday’s game.
