Sep 24, 2023 3:22 PM

France would like to see Joel Embiid suit up for them when they host the 2024 Summer Olympics. But French basketball federation president Jean-Pierre Siutat said that they need an answer by October 10.

“It will happen very quickly in all cases. We hope so and I think he knows it. We may have an answer by October 10," Siutat said. "We have set this deadline.”

Siutat added, “We never communicated anything official about Joel Embiid. There was buzz created from everywhere, and I repeat that I want him to come. However, we made no communication about the fact that he was with us. Today, he is still not with us. We are working on it, we have a firm desire to do it. He knows it. We had the opportunity to discuss it with him and we are awaiting a decision. The American team is very interested in the idea of having him. Cameroon is qualified for the pre-Olympics. It’s a delicate situation for him.”

Arturs Zagars On NBA Radar After World Cup

Sep 10, 2023 9:30 AM

Latvia was a surprise performer at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. As a big part of that success, Latvian point guard Arturs Zagars is popping up on the radar of some NBA teams.

In the fifth-place game against Lithuania, Zagars set a World Cup record with 17 assists. That capped a strong tournament for the 6-foot-3 point guard, where he averaged 12.4 points and 7.4 assists per game.

The 23-year-old is a free agent after playing for Nevezis in Latvia last season. He's now drawing interest from several top EuroLeague clubs, as well as some NBA teams. Latvian teammate and NBA veteran Davis Bertans thinks Zagars is ready to play in the NBA.

"I think it's a fair shot. It's all about timing, chance, and opportunity. Everything can happen if you end up at the right place at the right time. He has all the tools to do it," Bertans said of Zagars' NBA potential.

Luka Doncic Says Leg Injury Is 'Not Okay' But Will Keep Playing

Sep 9, 2023 9:15 AM

Luka Doncic admitted he's still dealing with a leg injury that he suffered shortly after the 2023 NBA All-Star Break. But Doncic said the injury won't keep him from playing, or from being ready for the upcoming Dallas Mavericks season.

"I do not know what to say," Doncic said about the injury. "It's not okay. At the same time, I have to prepare for one more game, and then for a whole season in the NBA."

Doncic went on to say he's healthy enough to play, or he would be sitting out. The Mavs and Slovenian star also said he's not playing because of pressure from FIBA, but because he loves representing his country.

"There is also one of the questions, but I play for Slovenia, not for FIBA," Doncic said. "I play no matter what, even in the Olympic qualifiers, if only I'm healthy."

Doncic also owned the criticism of Slovenia falling short of expectations, but that it hasn't changed his desire to represent his country.

"There is a lot of criticism every day, but I have learned to live with it. I don't think I'm the best in the world, though," Doncic said. "I simply love playing for Slovenia and will continue to do so."
