Pearl Turns Down D-League Offer, Takes Job With Marketing Firm

Bruce Pearl has declined an offer to coach the Texas Legends of the D-League and instead will join the marketing firm H.T. Hackney Co. in Knoxville.

A news release by the company cited Pearl's marketing and economic background as a student at Boston College.

Peral received a three-year show-cause penalty from the NCAA's committee on infractions last week.

Drew Naymick Signs With Czech League Champ

CEZ Basketball Nymburk, champion of the Czech League, signed center Drew Naymick to a one-year deal on Friday.

Naymick arrives from Bakersfield, where he averaged 8.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.2 blocks in 50 NBA Development League games last season. He has also played for Caceres 2016 C.B. in Spain and SKK Kotwica Kolobrzeg in Poland since finishing his four-year college career at Michigan State University.

Maine Red Claws Name Gene Cross Assistant Head Coach

The Maine Red Claws today announced that Gene Cross has been named the team’s assistant coach under Head Coach Dave Leitao. Cross, who was an assistant coach for the NBA Development League Utah Flash last season, reunites with Leitao after serving as his assistant coach at both the University of Virginia and DePaul University.

“I am excited to have Gene Cross on staff,” said Red Claws President and General Manager Jon Jennings. “He has a tremendous coaching resume in both the college and pro ranks, and his familiarity with both the league and with Coach Leitao gives the Red Claws a tremendous coaching staff.”

Cross, 39, joins the Red Claws after a year as the assistant coach for the Utah Flash. Prior to joining the pro coaching ranks, Cross had a long and productive career coaching in college, having coached at the University of Illinois-Chicago, DePaul University, University of Virginia, Notre Dame, and the University of Toledo. Cross was an assistant under Red Claws Head Coach Dave Leitao for five seasons at Virginia and DePaul.

Los Angeles D-Fenders Name Eric Musselman Head Coach

The Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA D-League have hired Eric Musselman as head coach, it was announced today by team President Joey Buss.

“I’m excited to announce Eric Musselman as the Los Angeles D-Fenders head coach,” said Buss. “He has vast experiences in both the NBA and NBA Development League and will be a great addition to our franchise. I look forward to working with Eric and having a successful season.”

Musselman, who has over 20 years of coaching experience, most recently served as head coach for the Reno Bighorns of the NBA Development League. During his stint in Reno, he compiled a 34-16 record, second best in the league, while leading the team to the Western Conference regular season title and a semifinal berth in the NBA D-League playoffs.

“I’m extremely excited to be joining a first class organization like the D-Fenders,” said Musselman. “Our staff will work hard to develop young players for the next level while at the same time being an extremely competitive team.”

Before coaching in the NBA Development League, Musselman spent over ten years as a coach in the NBA.

McCants Receives Interest From Maccabi Tel Aviv

Maccabi Tel Aviv is reportedly considering signing Rashad McCants.

McCants was the 14th overall pick of the 2005 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, but has bounced around with the Kings and in the D-League.

Legends Put Together Aggressive Offer To Pearl

Donnie Nelson said the Texas Legends put together "the most aggressive package in D-League history" in an effort to make Bruce Pearl the next head coach of the team.

"He is our A-Man and we are hoping to make something happen," Nelson said. "We have had basketball dialogue all day long. Based on our lunch this afternoon, my wallet is not near as big as Mark [Cuban] but it is wide open."

Pearl is nearing a decision on the job, though he has also entertained offers in broadcasting.

"I've always seen myself as a college basketball coach - it's all I've done," Pearl said. "Things change and I still want to coach and teach.

"I am very excited about today about listening to what the Legends have to offer."

Trey Johnson Signs With Teramo Basket

Trey Johnson has signed a one-year deal with Teramo Basket of the Italian League.

Johnson's agent, Mark Bartelstein, told ESPNLosAngeles.com that his client's contract does not include an opt-out clause to return to the NBA should the lockout be resolved in time for the league to hold all or part of the 2011-12 season.

Johnson averaged 25.5 points, 4.5 assists and 4.2 rebounds in 39 games with the Bakersfield Jam before the Lakers signed him for the end of the regular season through the playoffs.

Nate Bjorkgren Named Head Coach Of Dakota Wizards

The Golden State Warriors, owners and parent club affiliate of the Dakota Wizards, have named Nate Bjorkgren as head coach of team's NBA D-League franchise, it was announced today. 

Bjorkgren becomes the ninth head coach in Dakota franchise history and replaces Rory White, who led the Wizards to a 19-31 record in 2010-11.   

Bjorkgren, 36, has spent the previous four seasons as an assistant coach - under head coach Nick Nurse - with the NBA D-League’s Iowa Energy.

Pearl was most recently head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers.

Nancy Lieberman previously coached the Legends, but has moved to the front office.

Byars Signs One-Year Deal With Cholet

Derrick Byars has signed a one-year deal with Cholet Basket of France.

Byars arrives from Bakersfield of the NBA Development League, where he averaged 17.5 points and 5.3 rebounds in 33 games. 

In 2009-10, Byars helped Alba Berlin to make it all the way to the Eurocup final, averaging 7.7 points in 15 games. He has also played for Chorale Roanne in France and Koeln 99ers in Germany.
