Celtics Considering D-League Stint For Rajon Rondo's Return

Dec 30, 2013 9:25 PM

Brad Stevens said on Monday that the Boston Celtics are leaving open the possibility of giving Rajon Rondo an opportunity to get into basketball shape and continue his rehabilitation in the NBA D-League.

Rondo has not played since Jan. 25 after suffering a torn ACL and is expected to return this season.

"I would make that a decision on him and our staff," Stevens said. "That is something that has been discussed, probably some positives and negatives to that, but at the end of the day, it is an option as part of his rehabilitation."

The Maine Red Claws are the Celtics' D-League affiliate.

Rondo likely wouldn't return to the Celtics during their five-game West Coast road trip beginning on Jan. 5, but Stevens said he could spent time with Maine practicing and playing in D-League games before coming back to the NBA.

Chris Smith Expects To Stay With Knicks Through Possible Moves

Dec 20, 2013 7:59 AM

Despite the New York Knicks’ trade search for a point guard, Chris Smith received a call up from the NBA D-League and has remained confident about his roster spot. The Knicks have pursued Kyle Lowry while keeping an eye on Jeremy Tyler, but Smith anticipates staying with the organization past any moves.

“Yeah, definitely expect to be here,” Smith told RealGM. “I feel my number is going to be called soon, but I’m going to wait on it.”

Smith’s validity on the 15-player roster has been questioned and well publicized – only further fueled by the fact that the Knicks needed a reliable big man early this season. Still, Smith, the younger brother of J.R. Smith, has captured support of his teammates with his training habits.

In six games with the Erie BayHawks, Smith averaged 11.3 points and 4.5 rebounds in almost 25 minutes a night. Being groomed as a point guard, Smith left the D-League with an understanding of the effort needed at the professional level.

Smith scored 28 points on 12 of 16 shooting last Saturday in his last game with Erie before returning to the Knicks.

“The D-League was a good experience, a humbling one,” Smith said. “You don’t get all the perks as you do in the NBA, so it was humbling. I’m starting to come into my own as a player and proving that I belong here. Through time, no matter what the situation is, I’m going to stay humble, learn from the vets, and be ready when my number is called.”

Charlie Westbrook To Sign In NBA D-League

Dec 4, 2013 6:01 PM

Charlie Westbrook – a guard in training camp with the Miami Heat – has agreed to sign a deal in the NBA Development League, a league source told RealGM.

Westbrook had been deciding on his next professional team, one season after averaging 16.2 points for an Italian club, and he joined the D-League’s waiver process Wednesday evening to determine his franchise.

Westbrook, 24, played four games with the Heat in preseason, with averages of 5.7 minutes and 2.5 points. He was released by the Heat on Oct. 21.

Undrafted in 2012 out of the University of South Dakota, Westbrook was on the second team all-conference as a senior, scoring over 18 points per game.
