The Utah Jazz on Monday named longtime Detroit Pistons scout Walt Perrin their new director of player personnel, essentially filling the post left vacant by the departure of scouting director David Fredman.
Perrin spent the past nine years with the Pistons organization, including the past five with the title of director of college scouting. Prior to that, he spent one year as Detroit's director of scouting and two seasons as an assistant to then-Pistons head coach Don Chaney before returning to the team's scouting department.
Perrin's hiring was prompted by the recent resignation of Fredman, who left the franchise after 27 years of service to become assistant general manager of the Denver Nuggets.
A Northern Illinois University graduate, Perrin began his career as a coach of his alma mater's junior varsity team. In 1974 he moved to Northwestern University, where he spent 12 seasons as an assistant coach.
