Baron Davis had 27 points and 10 assists in leading Charlotte to a 97-94 preseason victory over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night.

Lee Nailon and David Wesley each added 18 points for the Hornets (3-2).

Orlando (2-2) was led by Grant Hill's 26 points and 12 rebounds. Mike Miller had 17 points and eight rebounds.

The Magic were without Tracy McGrady, who sat out the game with a lower back strain.

Not traveling with the Hornets were Elden Campbell (eye infection), Jamal Mashburn (sore right hamstring) and Matt Bullard (strained left calf).

The Magic missed their first eight shots and the Hornets seized a nine-point advantage, 17-8, barely seven minutes into the contest.

Charlotte eventually stretched its lead to 15 points midway through the third quarter.

Orlando did close the gap down the stretch, as Pat Garrity's 3-pointer with 6:48 remaining made it 82-80. But following a turnover on possession that could've given the Magic the lead, Davis responded with a 3-pointer for a five-point lead.

Davis shot 11-for-18, including 3-of-7 on 3-pointers.

The Magic, having trouble adapting to the NBA's new zone defense rules, were whistled four times for defensive three-second violations.
