SALT LAKE CITY -- The Jazz lead the NBA in turnovers this season, which is another way of saying they"re tops at throwing games away.

This time it was a pair of Stockton-to-Malone turnovers in the final 2:19, along with a missed rebound and a call that didn"t go their way which cost the Jazz, as the Indiana Pacers snuck away with a 100-97 victory Saturday night at the Delta Center.

"Mistakes are what cost you games," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "And we"re making our fair share of them now to not have a chance to win."

Karl Malone led the Jazz with 18 points, John Stockton had 13 points and 11 assists to go with his 3,000th career steal, and John Starks (13 points) and Greg Ostertag (12 points and 13 rebounds) played well off the bench for Utah. But for a game that featured 18 lead changes, 15 ties and went down to the wire, this one was surprisingly slow.

The Jazz failed to score the first four minutes of the game, yet trailed just 2-0 as the Pacers started the game 1-for-6 from the field with four missed free throws.
