John Denton of the Florida Today reports: Orlando head coach Doc Rivers was furious Saturday night upon finding out that New Jersey forward Kenyon Martin was suspended just two games for clubbing Magic star Tracy McGrady in the head a night earlier.

Martin was assessed a flagrant foul and ejected from the game after he hit McGrady in the side of the head with his forearm on a layup attempt with 2 minutes, 57 second remaining in the Magic's 109-96 victory Friday in New Jersey.

McGrady crashed hard to the floor, but got up and charged at Martin. McGrady shoved Martin with his shoulder, but was then hit in the side of the head with a wild punch from Martin. Martin, who was suspended a game for a flagrant foul on Karl Malone two weeks ago, was suspended this time for two games and fined $15,000.

"He absolutely should have gotten more than two games," Rivers said. "To me, there seemed like there wan an intent to injure there. The punch he threw should have been two games, and the flagrant foul should have been two more.

"I know Kenyon and I don't think he's a dirty player, but that was a dirty play."

Rivers said McGrady was tremendously restrained for what was done to him. He also suggested that Martin might have gotten off easy because Nets general manager Rod Thorn used to be a top NBA official.

"You do have to wonder about the Rod Thorn connection," Rivers said. "Rod used to be the king of security, and now his team's the one doing all the dirty plays. Kind of ironical, huh?

In a related article, Tim Povtak reports that McGrady will appeal the $5,000 fine levied against him by the NBA for his role in the altercation with New Jersey Nets forward Kenyon Martin.
