Former Utah Jazz center Olden Polynice will appeal his conviction on misdemeanor assault charges.

Polynice was sentenced Monday to probation and community service in justice court for a run-in with another golfer at a local course last year.

He immediately demanded a new trial.

Polynice"s appeal of the justice court decision moves the case into district court.

He was accused of hitting 21-year-old Tyler Swensen after he was struck above the right elbow by an errant tee shot by one of Swensen"s playing partners at the Old Mill Golf Course.
