Frank Isola of the New York Daily News gives us the latest version of the Sprewell trade rumor. The teams this time: New York, Atlanta and either Cleveland or Minnesota.

According to a league source, the Knicks are trying to recruit the Hawks to get involved in a trade for Latrell Sprewell, which will bring Cleveland's Andre Miller or Minnesota's Wally Szczerbiak to New York.

"They've been talking all summer about a deal," the source said.

Atlanta is trying to trade Jason Terry, but the Knicks will not take Terry, an undersized shooting guard, for Sprewell, their best player. Knicks GM Scot Layden seems determined to acquire Cleveland point guard Andre Miller. The Cavs, who are looking to deal Miller, would have little interest in Sprewell. They plan on resigning Ricky Davis and they drafted DeJuan Wagner.

But Cleveland GM Jim Paxson would be willing to strike a deal if the Knicks could find a third team.

The negotiations are further proof that the Knicks' front office has reached the conclusion that it can no longer survive with Sprewell and Allan Houston playing alongside each other. With Houston?s bloated contract, Sprewell is the only real option to be used in trade.
