The Jazz will open training camp today without a veteran point guard to back up John Stockton. But help is probably only a day away.
Mark Jackson, bought out of his contract over the weekend by Denver, clears waivers and becomes a free agent at 4 p.m. today and is reportedly ready to sign a contract with the Jazz soon afterward.
Kevin O'Connor, Jazz vice president of basketball operations, would not confirm the team's interest -- "We'll get one," is all he said about the team's need for another point guard -- but Jackson, the NBA's fourth-leading career assists leader, would be a good fit. Jackson's agent, Arn Tellem, could not be reached for comment, but sources in Denver said the 15-year veteran would accept a minimum-salary offer from Utah once he clears waivers.
