Three years ago, after Sprewell skipped the first five days of training camp, then-Knick Larry Johnson took it upon himself to reprimand Sprewell during a team meeting. According to one player, the argument became heated, but an understanding among the players and Sprewell was reached. Frank Isola writes Sprewell appreciated Johnson's candor and the two became closer following the intervention.

But since Johnson retired last year, the Knicks have been devoid of a true leader, one who is willing to speak up and has the respect of every clique in the locker room.

Madison Square Garden, perhaps taking a cue from the Sopranos, hired a sports psychologist for the Knicks and Rangers this year. Maybe the Knicks' own Dr. Melfi, who accompanied the team here, can tap into Sprewell's psyche. But it's not the same as a player or coach talking to Sprewell.
