Harpring might have received votes in a preseason poll to forecast the team's No. 2 scorer, but no one would have imagined him challenging Karl Malone (17.9) for the team lead.
Because of comparisons to the playing style of his coach, teammates have started calling Harpring "Little Jerry." Actually, I was thinking that likening Harpring's game to Sloan's was becoming an insult to Harpring. Yet history shows Sloan was a capable scorer with the Chicago Bulls -- not just a defensive stopper, as his reputation suggests. Sloan averaged 18.3 points in 1970-71, ranking third on an outstanding team.
