The Knicks spent this afternoon working out another center who stands nearly seven and a half feet tall, Slavko Vranes, not an unexpected move for a team with an undersized front line. But what might have been a surprise were the players who worked out for the Knicks in the morning.

Three point guards - Kirk Hinrich of Kansas, Jermaine Boyette of Weber State and Justin Hamilton of Florida - were scrutinized, adding to the three who started the team's workouts last week.

While Hinrich is the only one of the six who might be expected to be picked by the Knicks at No. 9 in next week's draft, it might seem odd that the Knicks would scout the position so extensively with three point guards on their roster and another one, Milos Vujanic, waiting overseas for a chance to join the team.

"We will be prepared for anything, to take any position," Knicks General Manager Scott Layden said. "We won't be troubled and won't have any problem taking a point guard. That's not really saying anything about the point guards we have, because we have guys who played very well this year and we think Milos is a very good player. But we have to do what's best for the team now, and if we have a very competitive situation at the point-guard position, good for us."
