The Nets will soon be approaching Lester Conner about their assistant coaching vacancy, according to a person who discussed the matter with coach Byron Scott yesterday.

Conner, 41, who spent parts of three seasons with the Nets during his playing career, is currently under contract as an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics. Nets president Rod Thorn is expected to be calling the Celtics this week to request permission to speak to Conner.

Thorn did not return a phone call late yesterday seeking comment. Celtics general manager Danny Ainge and Conner were out of the office and could not be reached for comment.

Conner has been with the Celtics for five seasons and has gained a reputation as a coach who relates well to players. A 13-year NBA veteran, he led the Nets with 7.4 assists and 2.2 steals per game in 1988-89.
