The Orlando Magic made their pitch to free-agent point guard Craig "Speedy" Claxton on Thursday, showing off their state-of-the-art headquarters and potential places to live in Central Florida.

But for Claxton, primarily a backup during his first three NBA seasons, his decision as to where to sign might come down to simply being promised a spot in the Magic starting lineup.

Claxton has made it known that he would be willing to leave the world champion San Antonio Spurs if it meant starting. He backed up Tony Parker most of last season, but thrived in the NBA Finals when he outplayed New Jersey star Jason Kidd in the fourth quarters of Games 5 and 6.

Claxton's agent, Bill Duffy, said that as many as 12 teams have expressed an interest in the 5-foot-11, 166-pound Claxton. He said Orlando is near the top of a list that includes Seattle, Washington, Utah, New York and Detroit because the Magic need a starting point guard.

"They got Reece Gaines in the draft, but I don't know that you want to turn your team over to a rookie," Duffy said. "I think guys like Speedy and Reece would complement each other really well. Gaines is a big guard and more of a defender, while Speedy is quick and really good in the open court."

Magic veteran Darrell Armstrong is also a free agent and might not return. Jacque Vaughn, last season's starter, won't be back after a disastrous postseason.

Another Orlando free-agent target, Juwan Howard, has apparently narrowed his choices down to the Lakers, Pistons and Magic. Detroit's bid of pulling off a sign-and-trade deal for the former University of Michigan star collapsed earlier in the week. Like with Claxton, the Magic can offer Howard a starting spot and he has said that money isn't the most important factor in his decision.
