Jiri Welsch has been on the roster of four different teams in just two seasons and he may soon be moved to a fifth. Welsch was drafted by the Sixers, traded to the Warriors, played with Golden State for one season, traded to the Mavericks, and finally traded to the Celtics.
The Celtics have three point guards (Gary Payton if he shows up, Marcus Banks and Delonte West), four swingmen (Welsch, Paul Pierce, Ricky Davis and Tony Allen) and six big men (Mark Blount, Raef LaFrentz, Walter McCarty, Tom Gugliotta, Kendrick Perkins and Al Jefferson).
Boston probably won't want to trade Pierce or Davis and so the only player with legitimate upside value is Welsch.
"When I did see (Celtics executive director of operations) Danny (Ainge) over the summer, he said he was real excited about Jiri's return," said Roger Montgomery, Welsch's agent, whose only communication with Ainge was in Orlando. "But that's what all teams convey to you. That's what Dallas and Golden State conveyed. We've got thick skin, Jiri and I both. All we can do is control what we can control. You can read between the lines on that."
