According to Mike D'Antoni, Knicks' president Donnie Walsh will not be leaving the organization anytime soon.
"Donnie's not going anywhere," D'Antoni said Tuesday. "Donnie's running the show."
There has been speculation that Walsh could be pushed out of his position since the Knicks announced that the team is planning to bring Isiah Thomas back as a consultant.
D'Antoni said he was not upset about the decision to formally rehire Thomas to a part-time position.
"We just think he can add something as a consultant, but Donnie is in complete control."
D'Antoni praised the job that Walsh has done.
"We've come a long way in two years," D'Antoni said. "Donnie's done an unbelievable job to get us out of the hole. We're out, and we're not going to go back in it."
D'Antoni said that Walsh has "made some unbelievable moves" to resurrect the team's fortunes.
"We've got a nice young team coming in. I hate all the hoopla on the other end. We should be excited about the upcoming season."
Thomas' reputation with players does in fact seem to be what has driven the move to bring him back.
"What he can offer is he's a Hall of Famer, top-50 player in the game and has a lot of credibility out there," D'Antoni said. "And Donnie is very smart in tapping into him when he needs it. There's not a whole lot else to it."
D'Antoni seemed to acknowledge that the negative publicity surrounding the move is a result of the failure the Knicks endured while Thomas was running the club.
"For us, it's a non-issue. For people that were in New York [during Thomas' tenure], it's a bigger issue."
D'Antoni indicated that Walsh alone will decide how to use Thomas.
"It's not going to change what Donnie does. If [Thomas] can help us -- in certain areas he can -- we can use that. There's no negatives to it other than it created a story for you guys."
