Former St. John's wing R.J. Luis has committed to LSU for next season. However, Luis and the Tigers are likely to have a fight on their hands when it comes to the 6-foot-6 wing's eligibility to return to college basketball.
Luis previously played three seasons in the NCAA. He started his college career at Massachusetts, then transferred to play two seasons for St. John's. Luis then entered the 2025 NBA Draft as an Early Entry Candidate.
Luis went undrafted at the 2025 NBA Draft before signing a two-way deal with the Utah Jazz. Before the season started, the Jazz traded Luis to the Boston Celtics, who waived Luis, then re-signed him to an Exhibit 10 training camp deal. Luis appeared in three preseason games for Boston, before being waived. He then suffered an injury and was waived before playing in the G League for the Maine Celtics.
The NCAA has ruled that players who have signed contracts in the NBA are not eligible to play college basketball. This rule was upheld in a series of legal challenges by Charles Bediako and the University of Alabama. Luis is expected to face a similar battle with the NCAA if he wishes to play for LSU next season.
