Nuggets Will Pay Luxury Tax 'If The Team Is Good Enough'

May 1, 2022 11:09 AM

The Denver Nuggets are poised to bounce back to contention with a healthy roster in 2023. To get there, the team will also need to add some help on their roster, and it appears Nuggets ownership is willing to pay to do so.

In his season-ending media availability, Nuggets president of basketball operations Tim Connelly said that the team's governors have given him clear direction on paying the luxury tax.

“If the team is good enough, they’ll pay accordingly. So, I don’t think that will be any sort of issue moving forward," Connelly said. "I mean, we're getting really, really expensive. It's a blessing and a curse because you're paying really good players."

The Nuggets have made only minimal tax payments in their history. And Denver hasn't been over the tax line since 2010. Denver is essentially at the tax line for next season with only eight players under contract. This puts them in position to pay the tax for the first time in over a decade.

Nikola Jokic Plans To Sign Supermax With Nuggets In Offseason

Apr 28, 2022 7:19 AM

Nikola Jokic plans to sign the supermax extension worth $254 million over five years if he's offered it this offseason by the Denver Nuggets.

"I would like it, of course," Jokic said when asked about a contract extension. "But it's not something that I'm deciding. I think if [the] offer is on the table, of course I'm going to accept it because I really like the organization, I really like the people who works here. I'm in [a] really good relationship with everybody from [the] owner to equipment manager."

Jokic and the Nuggets were eliminated from the playoffs by the Golden State Warriors in a close Game 5.

Jokic is widely expected to win MVP for the second straight season.

Will Barton, DeMarcus Cousins Separated During Blowout Loss At Warriors

Apr 19, 2022 11:15 AM

The Denver Nuggets had teammates bickering with one another during a second half that saw them being blown out by the Golden State Warriors while Nikola Jokic was also ejected.

"We're getting our ass whupped and a lot of emotions flare up," a clearly frustrated Monte Morris said. "We've just got to be tougher and stay together. We're not giving ourselves a chance to beat this team with a lot of mistakes.

"And also, we've got no f---ing chance if we're going to be apart. We've got to stay locked in, stay together."

Will Barton and DeMarcus Cousins exchanged words with Barton needing to be restrained.

"Nothing, just some goofy s---," Barton said when asked what happened. "Just some goofy s--- that happened on the bench that I shouldn't entertain. I can't let that happen in the series, in the playoffs, in the game. I've got to be better than that."

DeMarcus Cousins: NBA Teams Are Just Brutal

Apr 18, 2022 6:10 PM

DeMarcus Cousins spoke candidly about his struggles to reestablish himself on an NBA roster this season despite a strong performance with the Los Angeles Clippers during last year's playoffs. The Denver Nuggets had Cousins workout for them before the Milwaukee Bucks offered a deal.

"Well, honestly after the way I performed with the Clippers in the playoffs last [season] in my limited minutes, I thought something would have opened up for me," said Cousins. "I proved that I was healthy. I proved that I could help the team. I proved that I could fit whatever role was needed. It didn’t necessarily work out in my favor for whatever reason.

"Then Milwaukee came around. I thought I had found a home. Everything went smoothly. Another situation where I still don’t really understand that situation. They say it was for financial flexibility that [I was waived]. I’m not buying it. So, I don’t know. I’ve always been a firm believer everything happens for a reason, so this place [Denver] found me, and it’s been good. It’s been a good fit on both sides. They appreciate my value. It’s mostly been smooth since then."

The Nuggets had interest in signing Cousins before the Bucks approached him.

"Denver called before Milwaukee. And I worked out for Denver and then [general manager Calvin] Booth came and worked me out in Vegas. It was real quiet and hush, and two days later Milwaukee came in with a whole staff, it looked like. They worked me out and basically told me they were signing me after the workout.

"And I eventually asked them, ‘Did y’all come here because you heard Denver work me out?’ They eventually told me the truth and that was the case. And they wanted to get a deal done fast. But at the time when Denver worked me out, they told me, ‘We want you badly, we just don’t have the spot open.’

"Milwaukee came in and got a deal done quick. They put all their cards on the table, told me they needed me. They were even talking long term, and that’s why, like I said, that whole situation, it just didn’t make sense. What disappointed me the most was more so just going through my grind. For me, everything felt right. We were winning games. I showed that I’m healthy. I fit in Milwaukee perfect next to the guys that were out there. I put up numbers. Everything worked out. I don’t know. Just for it to happen the way it did.

"That same night that they cut me I ended up hurting my calf that night as well, so I ended up with a calf strain. I didn’t even shower. I didn’t even take off my uniform before they told me they were cutting me.

"It’s just that side of the business that people will never really understand. [NBA teams are] just brutal as f—. It’s brutal, man. And then the weird part about it, the part that sucks the most, they can give you whatever excuse they want. They can give the media, the public whatever excuse they want and then not even be the truth. And you’ll know for yourself that it’s bull—-."

Cousins never considered retiring after he was waived by the Bucks as the Nuggets almost immediately expressed interest.

Cousins was also asked what he would do differently to change how he is perceived and he said it would be to skip his predraft workout with the Sacramento Kings.

"What did Sac do for me? Besides say my name [draft day]. I did more for them than they did for me. That’s just being honest. Just being 100% honest. I had two owners, three GMs, seven coaches in seven years. I was there seven years. I had three GMs, two owners and seven coaches. Not much more needs to be said."

Michael Porter Jr. Not Ruling Out Return For First Round

Apr 17, 2022 2:35 PM

Michael Porter Jr. isn't ruling out the possibility of returning for the Denver Nuggets' first round series against the Golden State Warriors.

Porter is attempting to return from back surgery.

"Right now, I'm taking it game by game. I'm not ruling anything out," Porter told ESPN's Andscape following the Nuggets' 123-101 loss to the Warriors in Game 1 on Saturday night. "This is a thing I don't ever want to deal with again, so I'm just taking my time. ... I'm playing it game by game. Every morning I wake up and I know I'm feeling good. Every day I'm getting closer."

Porter underwent lumbar spine surgery on Dec. 1 to address a lower back injury. It was his third back surgery since November 2017.

Warriors vs Nuggets Odds, NBA Playoff Picks & Series Predictions

Apr 15, 2022 9:17 AM

The most-anticipated first-round matchup of the 2022 NBA Playoffs tips on Saturday night in prime time, when Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets take on Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and the Golden State Warriors. That is, if Curry plays.

The three-time NBA champion and two-time NBA MVP hasn’t suited up in nearly a month (foot). He is expected for this series, but is questionable for the opener. That, in turn, opens a door for Denver to gain homecourt advantage if it can pounce at Chase Center.

Ahead of Game 1, Bookies.com breaks down the series and makes our NBA picks to back on betting apps.

Nuggets vs Warriors Betting Tips

The Curry Factor: Steph Curry hasn’t played since March 16 and his status for Game 1 is in question. The Warriors were 2-7 this season vs. playoff teams or those still vying for a final spot. That includes a 131-124 Nuggets win on March 7.

Honors Even: This season there hasn’t been any great trends in the four games between the Warriors and Nuggets to take into account for NBA betting fans. Each team went 2-2 against the spread and the Over was 2-2 as well. Denver did win both games at Golden State.

Target Draymond Props: The Warriors are 19-4 when Draymond Green plays and scores eight points. The Nuggets allowed the sixth-most production to opposing power forwards and are bottom-three vs. forwards of either position. He could be a player to focus early on in terms of points-rebounds-assists props.

Nuggets vs Warriors Picks

The Warriors are -250 to win this first-round showdown, while the Nuggets are +210 to advance on sports betting apps.

The Warriors are known for their scoring prowess, but they actually rank No. 2 in the NBA in defensive efficiency. Defensive enforcer Draymond Green didn’t play in any of the four previous games vs. Denver – he’ll be tasked with making Jokic uncomfortable.

That’s the key. Jokic makes everything go for the Nuggets and he’ll continue to get his. But make it more challenging and Golden State can outscore Denver after that. We like the Warriors to ride their depth to the second round. Due to Curry’s questionable status for Game 1, we’re staying off the exact game odds.

Nuggets vs Warriors Schedule

Game 1: April 16, Denver at Golden State, 8:30 p.m. ET, ABC

Game 2: April 18, Denver at Golden State, 10 p.m. ET, TNT

Game 3: April 21, Golden State at Denver, 10 p.m. ET, TNT

Game 4: April 24, Golden State at Denver, 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC

Game 5-7: TBD if necessary

The incident, for which Campazzo was assessed a Flagrant Foul 2 and ejected, occurred with 7:24 remaining in the second quarter of the Nuggets’ 146-141 overtime loss to the Lakers on April 10 at Ball Arena.

Jamal Murray, Michael Porter Jr Unlikely To Play In Playoffs

Apr 9, 2022 7:02 PM

The Denver Nuggets have ruled Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. out for Sunday's regular season finale. Beyond that, it looks like neither player will suit up for the playoffs either.

Jamal Murray has missed the entire season after tearing his ACL on April 4, 2021. Murray has been getting closer to a return, but has yet to appear in a game for the Nuggets this season.

Porter injured his back on November 6 of this season. He then had surgery on his back in December. The original thought was that Porter would be out for the rest of the season. As he ramped up his activity following rehab, the Nuggets left the door open for a return.

Nikola Jokic First Ever With 2000/1000/500 Season

Apr 8, 2022 8:56 AM

Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic made history on Thursday night. Jokic became the first player in NBA history to turn in a season with at least 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 500 assists.

Despite splitting open his forehead early in the game, Jokic turned in a big effort to help the Nuggets clinch a playoff spot. The MVP candidate finished with 35 points, 16 rebounds and six assist. Jokic also added four steals and a block, as Denver clinched their fourth consecutive playoff berth.

As far as his chances at back-to-back MVP awards, Jokic is leaving that up to the voters.

“To be honest, I think there is a lot of guys that are playing at an extremely high level. … I’m just trying to be humble, to stay on the ground," Jokic said. "I don’t think about that to be honest, am I one of the best? I’m just trying to win the game.”
