Pacers won't panic

Aug 15, 2001 8:49 AM

Mark Montieth of the Indianapolis Star reports that the Pacers are prepared to go into camp with their current roster. "We're going to wait and see," Pacers president Donnie Walsh said Tuesday. "We were getting involved in a lot of different scenarios. But we like our team and we like our talent."

The Pacers pursued free agents Chris Webber, Nazr Mohammed, Hakeem Olajuwon and Marc Jackson. They had no realistic shot at Webber, who re-signed with Sacramento for more than $120 million over seven years. They were unable to arrange sign-and-trade deals for the others. "These players had a great deal of interest in coming here, but it would have called for trades we didn't feel we should do," Walsh said.

Walsh said he offered the 38-year-old Olajuwon a one-year contract for more money than Olajuwon will get per season from Toronto, but Olajuwon opted for a lower salary over four years. Jackson remains in limbo. Golden State can match any offer made to the restricted free agent. But it has given no indication if it would do so, and other teams aren't allowed to ask because that would be construed as collusion.

So the Pacers' remaining options are to see who's available for all or part of its midlevel exception of $4.5 million, or arrange a trade. Walsh is willing, but not panicking. "I have a funny quirk," he said. "I like to make good trades. If a good trade comes up, we'll consider it."

Zan Tabak Heads for Spain

Aug 7, 2001 12:44 PM

AP reports than Zan Tabak has signed a one-year contract with Real Madrid in Spain.  The back-up center from Croatia was a back-up center with the Pacers the past two years.  The team had been expecting him back, and president Donnie Walsh said, "I was surprised ... I need a guy who's a dirty-work guy because we've got a lot of talented players."
