The Minnesota Timberwolves have considered the possibility of getting far enough under the cap to extend Jimmy Butler up to his max salary this summer.
The Wolves would need to get approximately $10 million under the cap, which would require unloading the salaries of Andrew Wiggins and Gorgui Dieng. The Wolves are unlikely to be successful on this front.
Butler is scheduled to be a free agent in 2019.
Wiggins could become a player the Wolves consider trading in the future either way due to luxury tax concerns.

Karl-Anthony Towns and Tom Thibodeau have spoken on the phone this offseason, according to sources.
When Towns returns from his travels, he is expected to have a more substantive dialogue. There has not been an impasse between the two despite their sometimes strained relationship this past season.
Towns has not asked for a trade and the Minnesota Timberwolves are not considering dealing him.
Towns and the Wolves can begin to negotiate an extension this offseason.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are expected to decline their option on Cole Aldrich.
Aldrich's contract is partially guaranteed at $2 million.
The Wolves will have an extra $5 million to spend in free agency after buying out Aldrich.
Minnesota signed Aldrich to a three-year, $22 million deal in 2016.
There have been reports of strain in the relationship between Tom Thibodeau and Karl-Anthony Towns. Towns can sign an extension with the Minnesota Timberwolves this offseason.
Thibodeau was asked on Wednesday if all is well in his relations with Towns.
“Yeah, yeah. He’s doing quite well. And I love KAT," said Thibodeau. "He has had a terrific start to his career. He’s doing a little bit of traveling right now. Jimmy [Butler] is doing a little bit of traveling as well. So we’ve got two world travelers right now, but they’ll be back shortly. To get to where we are — obviously we’re not ultimately where we want to be, but it was a major step forward — you can’t do it individually. It’s got to be the whole group doing it together. And for the most part, I think we are in a good place.”
Jamal Crawford has declined his $4.5 million player option for the 18-19 season with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Crawford averaged 10.3 points and 20.7 minutes in 80 games.
Crawford joined the Timberwolves on a two-year contract last offseason.
Tyus Jones considered requesting a trade from the Minnesota Timberwolves after their elimination from the playoffs, but his concerns about playing time were assuaged.
Tom Thibodeau reassured Jones that he supports his development and that his opportunities will increase as Jamal Crawford is not expected to return.
The Wolves signed Derrick Rose at the end of last season, which cut into Jones' playing time.
Minnesota has no plans to trade Jones.
