Kawhi Leonard Returns To Spurs, Tells Teammates He'll Play Again This Season

Feb 27, 2018 2:56 PM

Kawhi Leonard returned to practice with the Spurs on Tuesday.

Leonard didn't participate in the team portion of the workout and it is not known when he might return. But Leonard told teammates that he will play again this season.

"It's always good to see his face," guard Danny Green said Tuesday. "He said he'll be back, so we knew he was going to be back eventually at some point -- playing-wise, not just being around. If he's that confident mentally, I know he's going to get the work done to get it done physically."

Leonard has played in nine of 61 games while struggling to recover from right quadriceps tendinopathy.

Leonard had been in touch with teammates while in New York seeking additional opinions on his injury.

"We're teammates, we still keep in touch via text," Green said. "He's rehabbing here, rehabbing there, feeling good."

A soft target date for when Leonard could return is March 8th.

Kawhi Leonard Could Return In March

Feb 26, 2018 6:05 PM

Kawhi Leonard plans to resume working with the team at the Spurs' practice facility this week. There are hopes of Leonard returning to the lineup in March.

Leonard has returned to San Antonio from New York after spending three weeks seeking further consultation on his right quad injury.

Leonard isn't expected to immediately start engaging in full five-on-five practices with his teammates.

Leonard's return is based on his comfort level managing the injury.

Gregg Popovich told reporters last week that he'd be "surprised" if Leonard returns this season.

Jimmy Butler Wasn't Forced To Decide Between Meniscus Repair, Removal

Feb 26, 2018 12:48 PM

Jimmy Butler did not have to decide between repairing his meniscus versus removing it.

Butler had an arthroscopic procedure on Sunday and he could return in time for the playoffs.

Butler met with Timberwolves doctors and specialists on Saturday after the MRI and also considered heading to California for a second opinion as things unfolded. Butler received a second and third opinion on Saturday night.

Butler’s procedure was neither a major repair nor a removal. Butler is hopeful of being able to return without some of the long-term risks involved with removing it.

Jimmy Butler Undergoes Successful Surgery On Meniscus

Feb 26, 2018 9:47 AM

Jimmy Butler underwent successful meniscus surgery on Sunday morning on his right knee.

The operation was performed by Team Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Diane Dahm at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Butler will be sidelined indefinitely and further updates as to his progress will be issued over the course of the rehabilitation process.

The injury occurred during the Wolves’ 120-102 loss to the Houston Rockets on Friday, February 23.

In 56 games this season, Butler averaged 22.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.0 assists.

Butler hopes to return for the playoffs.

One NBA executive suggested to The Ringer that Butler likely had part of his meniscus "shaved" via surgery based on his expected return date, which allows for a faster recovery but often has complications down the road.

Marcus Smart Fortunate He Didn't Suffer More Serious Injury To Hand

Feb 22, 2018 11:23 AM

Marcus Smart has been out of the Celtics' lineup for the past four weeks after punching a glass picture frame in a Los Angeles hotel room.

Smart was rushed to the hospital with a shard of glass still sticking out of his right hand.

“They pulled a glass piece out of the palm of my hand about that size (between two and three inches),” he said as he estimated the length with his index finger and his thumb. “They said there were two tendons that ran along the pinkie area. The glass was sitting right in between them. They were like: ‘You should play the lotto because you missed your tendons.’ They don’t understand [how I missed them].

“I thank God for that every day. It could have been worse. I’m glad it’s not.”

Smith was cleared to practice on Wednesday.

“I was devastated,” Smart said of missing 11 games with the injury that he said required 20 stitches to close. “Just from the fact that I couldn’t do anything to go out there and help.

“I’m a competitor. It’s one thing to sit on the bench because of something that happened that you couldn’t control. It’s another when it’s something you can control. I felt like I let my team down.”
