Kevin Davis On Track For Transfer To Washington

Feb 16, 2011 10:01 PM

Kevin Davis of Tacoma Community College is taking a full course load and will be ready to play for the Washington Huskies next season.

"He has verbally committed to Washington and they have offered him a scholarship," TCC head coach Carl Howell said. "I've been in constant contact with the Huskies and I've been told that the scholarship is there him as long as he does what he's supposed to do and is able to graduate and enter in the fall quarter."

Davis, who is 6'9" and 221 pounds, is a former standout at Todd Beamer High.

"He runs like a deer and he fits their system to a tee," Howell said.

Davis put up big numbers at Beamer (21.3 points, 15.3 rebounds and 6.6 blocks a game), but has tapered off at TCC. This season Davis is averaging 8.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.5 blocks and 20 minutes per game.

"The thing about him is a lot of people expect he's going to put up huge numbers, but I don't care what level he's in, he's not a back-to-the-basket, go-to scorer," Howell said. "He's a really good rebounder and defender. He can shoot the ball in little bit on the perimeter. And he's got a huge upside. But his game is really as a rebounder and a defender."

Howell has spent 13 years at Tacoma CC head coach four years at the school's athletic director. He's also produced 30 four-year and 17 Division-I players.

"Kevin is just not a skilled low-post player yet," Howell said. "He's an exceptional athlete playing basketball. He's a runner, jumper, shot blocker and rebounder. Those are all good qualities to have."

Alex Murphy Picks Duke

Feb 7, 2011 6:22 PM

Alex Murphy has committed to Duke and coach Mike Krzyzewski.

He choose the Blue Devils over Florida, Boston College, North Carolina, Kentucky, West Virginia and Villanova.

"I've had a feeling in my gut for a long time now and when I went down to Duke for my unofficial [visit] last month it just kind of solidified things," Murphy said.

"When I talked to Coach K at the end of that trip I knew that was where I wanted to be. The reason I didn't do it right then and there was that I wanted to come home and talk to my family and the people close to me."

Murphy had always maintained that Duke and Florida -- where his older brother Erik is currently a sophomore -- were the two schools recruiting him the hardest.

Larry Drew II Surprisingly Leaves UNC

Feb 4, 2011 11:13 AM

Larry Drew II has left North Carolina's team and will transfer, according to a source close to the situation.

Drew left campus Thursday, roughly 48 hours after recording nine assists in 19 minutes in North Carolina's 106-74 victory over Boston College.

The point guard has shared duties this season with Kendall Marshall, but lost the starting job to the freshman in January.

Drew is the son of Atlanta Hawks head coach Larry Drew.

If Drew transfers to another school, he would have to sit out one season and then have one season of eligibility remaining.

Billy Baron Leaves Virginia, Expected To Transfer To Rhode Island

Feb 3, 2011 9:06 PM

Billy Baron has decided to leave Virginia and is expected to join his father at Rhode Island.

The announcement of Baron’s departure was made late Thursday afternoon.

“I love my coaches and my teammates at Virginia,” Baron said in a news release issued by the Virginia athletic communications office. “Virginia is a great place, but I want to go home, be with my family and play for my dad.”

“I knew when Billy decided to come to Virginia he had a very hard decision and labored over it,” said Virginia head coach Tony Bennett. “Obviously we’re sad to see him go and appreciate his contributions to our program, but the desire to play for your father is very strong, as I can personally attest. We’ll miss him and wish him well.”

Baron played in 17 games for the Cavaliers and averaged 3.0 points.

Landen Lucas Doesn't Regret Transfer To Findlay

Feb 2, 2011 3:59 PM

Transfering from Sunset (Oregon) to Findlay College Prep was an opportunity Landen Lucas felt he couldn't pass up.

Lucas left Sunset after his sophomore season and will be in attendance on Friday to watch his former team. Sunset would have been considered a contender for the Class 6A state championship had he remained at the school.

"I'm not going to lie. That weighs on you," Lucas said by telephone. "I really believe we could have had a chance to win a state championship. But I have to remember that we have a chance to win a national championship at Findlay. It's hard, but you have to look ahead."

Lucas didn't go to Findlay for exposure, as it was about preparing for college.

"If I had to make the choice again, I would still do it," Lucas said. "I wanted a new challenge, to push myself and get prepared to go college a year or two ahead of everyone else. (Findlay players) come out of here and make an immediate impact in college because they're so far ahead of everyone else."

As for his college decision, Oregon State and Oregon remain contenders.
