This one was payback.
The San Antonio Spurs remembered that the Seattle SuperSonics had handed them one of their two defeats this season. And they didn't like the way the Sonics had handled themselves.
So on Wednesday night, the Spurs' mission was to set things right.
Mission accomplished. San Antonio took Seattle out of the game instantly, and kept them out for 48 minutes, roaring to a 110-93 victory before 18,163 spectators in the Alamodome.
"What you saw tonight was a team that felt like they gave away a game early in the season," Sonics coach Nate McMillan said. "They came out and were sharp defensively, they were sharp offensively, and they were coming out to prove the point that they are the better team, and they played that way tonight. Tonight we got beat in every way you can imagine."
Here are some of those ways. The Spurs led, 40-20, after one quarter. They set season-highs for points after one quarter, points after two quarters and points after three quarters. They outscored Seattle in the paint, 56-42; on fastbreaks, 19-13; and in second-chance points, 18-11.They led by as many as 28 points and never trailed.
Playing their second game in as many nights, the Sonics had no answer for the swarming Spurs, who had been off since Sunday.
