Cheap shot of the week?

That's easy.

It came courtesy of Jazz owner Larry Miller.

At a press conference called to announce a five-year contract extension for vice president of basketball operations Kevin O'Connor, Miller made reference to some "fair-weather friends" who have bailed out on him and the organization in recent years.

Miller did not identify those with whom he has a problem, though it's easy to guess that the short list includes former coach-general manager-team president Frank Layden and former assistant coach-director of player personnel-VP of basketball operations Scott Layden.

Too bad.

Whatever beef Miller has with the Laydens, who left the Jazz within a four-month span in 1999, Utah owes the father-son team more than it could ever repay.

Because of his basketball knowledge, his ability to recruit fans and his common sense approach to business, Frank Layden was the No. 1 reason a struggling franchise survived in this relatively tiny market long enough for Miller to step forward and prevent its move to a more logical location.
