Chris Tomasson of the Akron beacon Journal reports that the Cavaliers are looking for some back court depth. There have been recent talks of a trade for the Spurs? Antonio Daniels. But with that deal on hold, they are checking into Piston?s free agent Damon Jones.
Lamar Holt, the agent for Jones, said Cavs general manager Jim Paxson called Wednesday to express interest in his client. Jones is working out this summer in his hometown of Houston. ``Jim said he's interested in two or three free agents, and he's looking at a couple of trade possibilities,'' Holt said. ``He wants to set up a meeting between John Lucas (the Cavs coach who lives in Houston) and Damon.''
Holt said Paxson did not reveal names. However, sources say two other point guards on the short list for the Cavs are Daniels and free agent Erick Strickland, who played last season for Boston.
Jones is looking to sign for the $1.4 million exception after making the minimum of $565,850. ``Whichever team grabs me will be getting a player that's hungry,'' said Jones, 25. ``Going to a team like Cleveland would definitely appeal to me.''
After the trade that sent Andre Miller to the Clippers, the Cavs inquired about Daniels. The Spurs offered to deal Daniels for big man Chris Mihm, but were turned down. The Cavs are willing to trade forward Lamond Murray, but the Spurs aren't keen on taking on the final four years of his contract. Also in the mix for Daniels are Boston, Miami and Minnesota.
