At almost every basket in the Knicks' training facility today, a hopeful prospect stood sweating, finishing off a nearly two-hour workout and hoping that he had caught someone's eye. But the reality was that when the Knicks pick at No. 9 on June 26, they have bigger targets in mind.

Three point guards worked out today: Marcus Hatten of St. John's, Reece Gaines of Louisville and Leandro Barbosa, who played in Brazil. Most likely none of them will be under consideration when the Knicks make their first-round selection. In thinking big, though, the Knicks may take a hard look at a player who will be here on Friday, Pavel Podkolzine, a 7-foot-4 Russian center.

A year ago, the Knicks decided to forgo the youth movement, trading their No. 7 pick in a deal that brought Antonio McDyess to New York along with the No. 25 overall pick. But Scott Layden, the Knicks' general manager, suggested that the team would use the pick this time. "We've had inquiries from both teams in front of us and behind us," Layden said. "We'll see where that goes. We like the pick."
