Free agent point guard Speedy Claxton will visit Washington on Thursday, when he is scheduled to meet with team officials and tour the team's facilities, according to his agent, Bill Duffy. Claxton, a 5-foot-11 playmaker who increased his stock in NBA circles with a strong postseason showing for the NBA champion San Antonio Spurs, is among the top free agent point guards Washington is trying to lure.
Though Washington drafted Blake, it does not have an experienced point guard under contract. Landing one is the Wizards' main priority in free agency and Jordan, an assistant last season with the New Jersey Nets, got a first-hand view of Claxton during the Spurs' win over New Jersey in the NBA Finals.
Claxton, drafted 20th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2000 draft, averaged 6.2 points the past two seasons but has been beset by knee and shoulder injuries that limited him to 92 games. Washington has roughly $6.5 million under the salary cap to spend on free agents and could possibly use the allotment to sign two point guards.
The Wizards also like Seattle free agent point guard Kevin Ollie. Other free agent point guards who fit in Washington's price range include Kenny Anderson, Bimbo Coles, Erick Strickland, Antonio Daniels, Darrell Armstrong and Tyronn Lue, who played the past two seasons for the Wizards.
