North Carolina freshman Caleb Wilson is adapting to playing with a cast on his non-shooting hand and could return to action soon, coach Hubert Davis said Monday. Wilson fractured his left hand during a loss to Miami on February 10.
Davis praised Wilson's eagerness to return during his semiweekly radio show.
"Caleb, he is great," Davis said. "I think if I said 'OK,' I think he would play with his cast on or his splint. I think he would. He's just champing at the bit to come back because obviously he loves to play, but he loves his teammates and he loves playing here."
Wilson, a projected top-five selection in the 2026 NBA draft, is averaging 19.8 points and 9.4 rebounds this season. He has scored in double figures in all 24 games, establishing a North Carolina freshman record. His 23-point performance in a home victory over Duke on February 7 preceded the injury.
The severity of the fracture was not immediately known. Wilson left the Miami game before returning in the second half and finishing with just 12 points, his lowest output of the season. An MRI after the team returned to Chapel Hill confirmed the fracture, and the university declared him out indefinitely on Thursday.
Davis credited Wilson for maintaining a positive attitude despite the setback.
"He did the exact opposite," Davis said. "He's in practice. He's dribbling with his right hand. He's in the huddles."
The 16th-ranked Tar Heels defeated Pittsburgh 79-65 on Saturday without Wilson and standout Henri Veesaar. Both players missed Tuesday night's rivalry game loss against NC State. North Carolina's remaining schedule includes four matchups against top-35 KenPom teams, concluding with a regular-season finale at Duke on March 7.
