Justin Dentmon scored a team-high 30 points to lead the Austin Toros to its first-ever NBA Development League Championship with a 122-110 victory over the Los Angeles D-Fenders Saturday night.
Eric Dawson scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while six Toros, including all five starters, scored in double figures. Julian Wright netted 19 points, while Brad Wanamaker poured in 18.
“We expected to win every game,” said Toros head coach Brad Jones. “We beat one heck of an L.A. D-Fenders team and we did it as a group so I’m really really excited for our guys.”
Mardy Collins finished with a game-high 31 points off the bench for the D-Fenders, while teammate Elijah Millsap scored 26. Malcolm Thomas recorded 17 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.
Iowa Energy forward Moses Ehambe is the recipient of the 2012 Jason Collier Sportsmanship Award, as voted on by the 16 NBA Development League head coaches. The award honors the player who best represents the ideals of character and conduct on and off the court.
A four-year NBA D-League veteran, Ehambe averaged 12.8 points, 2.7 rebounds and 26.9 minutes in 46 games, 26 starts, during the 2011-12 campaign. The 6-6, 215-pound swingman out of Oral Roberts led the Energy in scoring six times, including back-to-back 30-plus point games on Dec. 1 and 3.
“Moses is a consummate professional, an exemplary teammate and valuable member of the Energy and NBA D-League families,” said Chris Alpert, Vice President of Basketball Operations and Player Personnel for the NBA D-League. “His continued commitment to being an ambassador of the game on and off the court is apparent in his deep respect for his teammates, opponents and referees as well as his passion for being a productive member of the Des Moines community. The Los Angeles Lakers have recalled guard/forward Christian Eyenga from the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA Development League.
Acquired from the Cleveland Cavaliers on March 15 along with Ramon Sessions in exchange for Luke Walton and Jason Kapono, Eyenga has yet to play for the Lakers this season. In six regular season games with the D-Fenders, Eyenga averaged 12.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.3 blocks and 33.0 minutes, before helping the D-Fenders reach the D-League finals.
The San Antonio Spurs have recalled Cory Joseph from the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League.
Joseph, a 6-3 guard, has been assigned to Austin three times this season, most recently on March 20. Since then he has helped lead the Toros to the D-League Finals. In the playoffs, Joseph is averaging 11.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.29 steals in 34.3 minutes through seven games.
The Philadelphia 76ers have signed guard Xavier Silas for the remainder of the 2011-12 season. Silas was previously a member of the Sixers NBA Development League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws.
Silas (6-5, 205) was not selected in the 2011 NBA Draft following his senior season at Northern Illinois but signed to play with BCM Gravelines Dunkerque Grand Littoral of the French League. On December 9, he signed with the Sixers and participated in the team’s training camp along with both preseason games against Washington before being waived prior to the start of the regular season.
Shortly after, Silas joined the D-League. In 39 games with 22 starts for the Red Claws, he averaged 9.8 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 23.6 minutes per game while shooting 40.1% from the floor, 29.5% from 3-point range and 78.7% from the line.
The Clippers have recalled Travis Leslie from the Bakersfield Jam of the NBA Development League.
Leslie has been with the Jam since March 30, and appeared in four playoff games with Bakersfield. In two separate stints with the Jam this season, Leslie appeared in 10 regular season games and averaged 10.2 points, 1.4 assists, 3.2 rebounds and shot 50.4 percent from the field in 20.4 minutes per game.
Austin Toros guard Justin Dentmon has beennamed the 2012 NBA Development League’s Most Valuable Player, as voted on by the NBA D-League’s 16 head coaches.
Dentmon, a 6-0, 185-pound guard out of Washington, started in all 40 regular season games he played for the Toros, averaging 22.8 points, 5.5 assists, 3.7 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 37.2 minutes. A 2012 NBA D-League All-Star, Dentmon ranked fourth in the League in scoring, finishing with double-digit points in 39 games. He led the Toros in scoring in 24 games and was the assist leader 26 times.
Maine Red Claws guard Kenny Hayes has been named the 2012 NBA Development League Most Improved Player, as voted on by the 16 NBA D-League head coaches. The award honors the player who demonstrated the most significant improvement through the course of the season.
Hayes, a 6-2, 175-pound guard out of Miami (Ohio), completed his second season with the Red Claws, averaging 17.1 points on .448 shooting to go along with 5.2 assists and 4.1 rebounds. Hayes started Maine’s final 24 games; and recorded 19.3 ppg, 6.8 apg and 4.9 rpg in his last 10 games.
“Kenny’s season for the Red Claws is evidence that hard work and dedication don’t go unnoticed,” said Chris Alpert, Vice President of Basketball Operations and Player Personnel for the NBA D-League. “His marked improvement during the course of the year proved that his focus on development really paid off. I’m proud to congratulate him on being recognized for his efforts by the League’s coaches.”
Hayes becomes the third player to receive most improved honors, joining Dar Tucker (New Mexico, 2011) and Mildon Ambres (Idaho, 2010) as NBA D-League players to have earned the award.
The Golden State Warriors have signed free agent center Mikki Moore to a contract.
Moore, a 12-year NBA veteran, is being called-up from the Idaho Stampede of the NBA Development League, where he has appeared in 33 games this season and averaged 11.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.06 blocks in 28.1 minutes per contest. He is shooting 55.4% (134-242 FG) from the field and has posted six double-doubles.
The Wizards have signed Morris Almond and waived Roger Mason Jr.
Almond has spent the past four seasons in the NBA D-League, where he has averaged 24.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and shot .495 from the field in 119 career games (112 starts). He has played with the Utah Flash (2007-09), Maine Red Claws (2009-10 and 2011-12) and the Springfield Armor (2009-10).
