Bulls Sign Max Strus To Two-Way Contract

Oct 22, 2019 3:07 PM

The Chicago Bulls have signed guard Max Strus to a Two-Way contract.

Strus (6-5, 215) went undrafted in the 2019 NBA Draft but was signed to the Boston Celtics’ roster during the preseason. He played in four games for Boston and averaged 5.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 14.6 minutes before being waived. The native of Hickory Hills, Ill., began his collegiate career at Lewis University before transferring to DePaul after his sophomore season. Upon the conclusion of his senior campaign in 2018-19, Strus was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team after averaging 20.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 35 games. He set DePaul season records with 113 3-pointers and 311 3-point attempts, and his 705 total points rank third on the Blue Demon’s season scoring list. Strus was a three-time BIG EAST player of the week as a senior and finished his career with 29-straight games with double-figure scoring. His career scoring average of 18.6 points per game ranks fourth in DePaul’s history.

Bulls Exercise 20-21 Options On Lauri Markkanen, Wendell Carter, Chandler Hutchison

Oct 21, 2019 9:08 PM

The Chicago Bulls have exercised the fourth-year option on forward Lauri Markkanen, and third-year options on center Wendell Carter Jr. and forward Chandler Hutchison. By exercising their options, all players will be under contract with the Bulls for the 2020-21 season.

Markkanen came to the Bulls in a Draft-night trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2017 NBA Draft. After being selected to the All-Rookie First Team during the 2017-18 campaign, Markkanen’s sophomore season yielded improvements in his averages in points (18.7), rebounds (9.0) and assists (1.4) while shooting .430 from the field, .361 from 3-point range and .872 from the free-throw line in 52 games (51 starts). The Arizona product added 120 threes to his Bulls rookie record of 145 to bring his career total to 265, the 17th-most by an NBA player within his first two seasons. Posting 12 of his 20 double-doubles for the 2018-19 season prior to the All-Star break, Markkanen was named to the 2019 Mtn Dew Ice Rising Stars where he put up 21 points and six rebounds for Team World.

Carter Jr. was selected seventh overall by Chicago in the 2018 NBA Draft out of Duke. Appearing in 44 games (all starts), he averaged 10.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.32 blocks in 25.2 minutes per game while shooting .485 from the floor and .795 from the charity stripe. Just the 10th Bulls rookie to start on opening night, the Atlanta native reached double figures in points in nine of his first 15 games to go along with four double-doubles. Carter Jr. blocked at least one shot in 33 of his 44 games and produced 17 multi-block performances, tied for the seventh-most in franchise history by a rookie. On Dec. 28, 2018, he put up 17 points, 13 rebounds, two assists, one steal and three blocks in a victory at Washington, becoming the only rookie during the 2018-19 season to produce such a stat line and the 12th since the turn of the century.

Hutchison, a four-year player at Boise State, was selected 22nd overall by Chicago in the 2018 NBA Draft. Seeing action in 44 games (14 starts) during his rookie campaign, he averaged 5.2 points and 4.2 rebounds in 20.3 minutes per game while shooting .459 from the field and .605 from the free-throw line. As a reserve, Hutchison committed only 17 turnovers, which were the ninth-fewest among NBA players who saw at least 500 minutes coming off the bench. The Mission Viejo, Calif., native was a season-best +18 on Oct. 27 at Atlanta, and when he was a +5-or-better, Chicago had a winning percentage of .727.

Tomas Satoransky Named Starting Point Guard For Bulls

Oct 17, 2019 1:14 AM

Jim Boylen named Tomas Satoransky the starting point guard for the Chicago Bulls over Kris Dunn.

Boylen pointed to Satoransky's shooting and off-ball movement as reasons for his decision. Satoransky is expected to play between 30-32 minutes per game, with Dunn getting 18-22 minutes.

“I love the way he throws the ball ahead. I love his command of our offense already. He’s obviously a terrific shooter. He can play off those guys, he can play on the ball and off those guys and create space. Him and I have a real good connection and he’s got a really good feel. And I feel confident in him running that first group," said Boylen.

Zach LaVine, Otto Porter Jr., Lauri Markkanen and Wendell Carter Jr. round out the Bulls starting five.

Boylen added that Dunn has embraced being a leader in the team's second group.

“Kris has to be kind of our defensive force in that second group. He can impact the game coming off the bench. He’s embraced it, I’ve spoken with him, and we had a good conversation about it. He’s all about winning, and I’m really proud of him.’’

Zach LaVine Focused On Winning, Making All-Star Team This Season

Oct 10, 2019 11:56 PM

Zach LaVine set out his ambitions for this upcoming season with the Chicago Bulls, focusing on winning and making the All-Star team.

"Everything comes with winning. I feel like if we win and we're in the right positions, the sky is the limit for me. I had an All-Star-caliber year last year, but we had 22 wins so it got a little bit swept under the rug. But that's how it's supposed to be when you have 20 wins. But if I continue to play the way I'm supposed to, there's no reason I shouldn't be an All-Star or All-NBA type guy," LaVine told Eric Woodyard of ESPN.

LaVine averaged 23.7 points and 4.7 rebounds last season.

Jim Boylen added that he wants to see LaVine get to the free throw line more often.

"What I'd like him to be is a two-way player, and I'd also like him to be a guy that shoots eight, nine, 10 free throws a game," said Boylen.

Jim Boylen: Whether Coby White Is A One Or A Two, He's A Baller

Oct 7, 2019 11:20 AM

The Chicago Bulls have been impressed by Coby White during the first week of camp.

“He’s been really good [the first week],’’ Jim Boylen said. “What I’ve been impressed with is his maturity level on the floor and how quickly he can kind of pick up things and grow.

“He’s not scared, which I love. He’s more physical than I thought this early. He’s a big body. He can play on the ball and off the ball. He shot the ball very well in camp. He puts a shoulder on you, you feel it. His physicality is what we hoped it would be; I didn’t know if it would come this fast. We’re thankful for him.’’

Minutes could be difficult to find for White as the Bulls also added Tomas Satoransky.

“We’ve added ballers to this team,’’ Boylen said. “Coby White, whether he’s a one, he’s a two, he’s a baller. . . . That’s what this roster is. We’ve got to do a good job using those guys and give them space and freedom to use what they have.’’
