Joakim Noah: To Be A Coach You Have To Be A Little Sick

Oct 29, 2021 10:31 AM

Joakim Noah was honored by the Chicago Bulls during Thursday's game against Tom Thibodeau's New York Knicks on the same day he was named an ambassador for the franchise.

Noah said he misses the NBA, but "feels a lot less anxiety" and sleeps better.

Noah also said he has no interest in coaching.

"To be a coach, you have to be a little bit sick," Noah said, "When you're not feeling it, you have to motivate a group of men to get a job done. That's a tough job."

Bulls Hire Joakim Noah As Ambassador

Oct 28, 2021 3:26 PM

The Chicago Bulls have named Joakim Noah a new Bulls Ambassador.

Noah was selected by Chicago with the ninth overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft. While with the Bulls, he was a two-time NBA All-Star (2013, 2014) and a three-time All-Defensive team selection (First Team in 2013 and 2014; Second Team in 2011). The Bulls big man was also named the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year en route to claiming All-NBA First Team honors in 2014.

During his time with Chicago, Noah appeared in 572 regular-season contests (465 starts) and averaged 9.3 points, 9.4 rebounds (3.3 offensive), 3.0 assists, 1.41 blocks and 0.84 steals in 29.5 minutes per game. He helped guide Chicago to the postseason seven times, where he appeared in 60 playoff games with the team and averaged 9.7 points, 11.0 rebounds (4.0 offensive), 2.8 assists, 1.77 blocks and 0.97 steals in 35.0 minutes per game.

Known for his many efforts in the community, he received the prestigious J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award from the NBA in 2015.

“I’m truly humbled to be honored by both the team and city that I have always loved and respected,” said Noah. “Even more so to be able to celebrate tonight with family, friends, former players and coaches, and most of all – the Bulls fans who helped drive my energy throughout my years in a Bulls uniform at the United Center. It means so much to me that I’m now a Bull for life. I love you all and am thrilled tonight to solidify my continued connection with the Bulls and the city of Chicago, in this new chapter of my life.”

“When Joakim played for the Bulls, you could see how much he cared about the kids and everything that’s going on in the city,” said Michael Reinsdorf, Bulls President and COO. “He still comes into town, and he still cares so much. People in Chicago realize that he was more than just a basketball player, he was someone who cared about the community, someone who was going to do his best to make a difference in this world and he has. Joakim embodies every quality you’d want in a team ambassador. This is a natural next step for a former player with such strong history of giving back to Chicago.”

NBA's Tampering Investigations Into Bulls, Heat Remain Ongoing

Oct 19, 2021 10:02 AM

At his annual State of the NBA address, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was asked for an update on the tampering investigations into the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat. Silver only said, "That process is still ongoing."

Both the Bulls and Heat are being investigated for circumventing free agency rules by entering into early agreements with Lonzo Ball (Chicago) and Kyle Lowry (Miami). It's believe that both the Bulls and Heat are facing fines and potential loss of draft picks, if it is found they jumped the gun in free agency.

There is past precedent here, as the Milwaukee Bucks were made to forfeit a 2022 second round pick. The Bucks were found to have illegally agreed to acquire Bogdan Bogdanovic from the Sacramento Kings via a sign-and-trade transaction, before free agency had opened.

In Lowry's case, as soon as 2021 free agency opened it was reported that the Heat, Lowry and Toronto Raptors had agreed to a sign-and-trade transaction sending Lowry to Miami. This type of deal involves the player negotiation a contract with the new team, and then the two teams agreeing on trade parameters.

For Ball, it was a similar situation between himself, the Bulls and the New Orleans Pelicans. Like Lowry, Ball's deal was reported just moments after free agency opened.

NBA teams are not allowed to negotiate contract terms, nor sign-and-trade agreements, until after free agency opens. It's a regular occurrence for contract terms to be announced seconds after the negotiating period is live. It is rare for those deals to involve somewhat complex sign-and-trade agreements.

Five Players Earn Contracts After Camp Invites

Oct 17, 2021 10:23 AM

It's relatively rare for a player on a non-guaranteed training camp deal to earn a regular season roster spot. This is generally limited to one player every few years. This offseason, five players outplayed their camp invite status and seem to have stuck for the regular season.

This group includes: Isaiah Hartenstein (LA Clippers), Wayne Selden (New York Knicks), Dennis Smith Jr. (Portland Trail Blazers), Matt Thomas (Chicago Bulls), Brad Wanamaker (Indiana Pacers). Armoni Brooks could be included in this grouping as well, but his situation was somewhat unique given his re-signed status and conversion process as a former Two-Way player.

When a player makes an opening night roster on a training camp deal, their contract converts to a standard non-guaranteed contract. Prior to that happening, a camp deal doesn't count against the salary cap or tax, and there is no guaranteed salary.

Prior to this season, Dwight Howard was the last player to go from camp invite to roster. Howard made the Los Angles Lakers roster out of camp in 2019.

Alford is expected to join the Windy City Bulls of the G League as an Affiliate Player.

Chicago still has three more transactions to make to get into regular season roster compliance. Tyler Cook, Stanley Johnson and Matt Thomas all remain with the Bulls in competition for the team's final roster spots.
