Lebron Sufferes Fracture, Will Wear Protective Mask

Dec 30, 2004 1:45 PM

Lebron James found out on Thursday that he will have to wear a protective mask on his face, but shouldn't miss any games. James fructured his left cheek bone after being accidentaly elbowed by Houston Rockets' C Dikembe Mutombo in the 2nd quarter of a 98-87 loss on Wednesday.

James admitted that he briefly lost consciousness after receiving the hit. He will be fitted with the protective mask once the swelling in his face goes down.

Head coach Paul Silas was relieved the injury wasn't more serious and thinks Cleveland's leading scorer will be back Monday at Charlotte: "I am so happy. That's the best present I could have received. Your worst fear is that he's going to be out a long time. If they had to operate, he could have been out four to five weeks."

On December 30th, 1984, Lebron James was born.  As he plays his final game as a teenager, he looks more like a 30 year-old than a 20 year-old.

While growing up and playing in AAU competitions, James was also asked to present his birth certificate to prove his age.

``They questioned me because of the level of my game,'' the Cleveland Cavaliers forward recalled last week. ``I've always played the game above my age.''

``I don't believe that,'' Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers joked recently when told James was still weeks away from his 20th birthday. ``I'm going to check. The way he's playing, he's got to be 30.''

"LeBron, that's what he's good at," McInnis said. "We all play behind LeBron. Like in the fourth quarter, LeBron told me to get going. I got on the pick-and-roll and got some baskets. He got Tractor Traylor into the game. We've got guys that can hurt you."
