Earl Clark, Lakers Discuss Possible Reunion

Nov 26, 2014 11:19 AM

The Los Angeles Lakers have had a level of dialogue with forward Earl Clark on a potential reunion, league sources told RealGM.

Over the past several weeks, the Lakers have looked into available wing talent that features Quincy Miller. The Lakers came out of last week’s free agency workouts without delivering a deal, and while no deal has been reached yet with Clark, they are expected to have an elevated urgency due to the recent season-ending injury to Xavier Henry.

In four games for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA Development League, Clark has averages of 28.8 points, 7.3 rebounds and two assists.

Clark, 26, had his most productive NBA run with the Lakers in the 2012-13 season. He was an afterthought in the franchise’s trade for Dwight Howard, but averaged 7.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game and secured a multi-year contract in the 2013 offseason.

Clark lasted half of last season with the Cleveland Cavaliers before signing a pair of 10-day contracts with the New York Knicks. He averaged 4.8 points and 2.6 rebounds in 54 total games.

Clark was the 14th overall draft pick to the Phoenix Suns in 2009 out of Louisville. He has played five NBA seasons with Phoenix, Orlando, the Lakers, Cleveland and New York.

Xavier Henry ruptured his left Achilles tendon during the Los Angeles Lakers' practice on Monday.

Henry underwent an MRI on Monday to confirm the injury.

Henry, who re-signed with the Lakers as a free agent on July 25, has appeared in nine games this season, averaging 2.2 points, 0.4 rebounds, 0.3 assists, and 0.33 steals in 9.5 minutes per game. The five-year pro averaged career-highs in points (10.0), rebounds (2.7), and assists (1.2) per game last season.

Lakers Hope Loyalty Toward Nash Will Help Down The Line With Free Agents

Nov 24, 2014 1:56 PM

Steve Nash plans on remaining in Manhattan Bech for the remainder of his life and is expected to be part of the Los Angeles Lakers' franchise even after his contract expires.

Nash had a breakfast meeting last week with Mitch Kupchak.

"He's planning to come around when he's ready," Lakers' spokesman John Black said.

The Lakers have given Nash time and space to come to grips with the end of his season and possibly his career.

"Going forward I hope we all can refocus our energies on getting behind these Lakers," Nash wrote in a Facebook post on Nov. 7. "This team will be back and Staples will be rocking."

Jeanie Buss believes in good karma and the returns of treating people well, which is part of the reason why Nash still is valued by the franchise.

Treating Nash well could be viewed by potential free agents as a sign of the team's loyalty.

Kevin Durant worked out with Nash at the Lakers' training facility in the offseason and clearly respects the veteran point guard. Durant will be the prize of the 2016 free agency class and the Lakers will certainly pursue him.

Lakers Didn't Pursue Non-Superstar Free Agents In 2014

Nov 24, 2014 11:16 AM

The Los Angeles Lakers pursued Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James, but they sat out the pursuit of B-plus-level players such as Lance Stephenson, Eric Bledsoe, Chandler Parsons, Gordon Hayward, Kyle Lowry, Isaiah Thomas and others.

The Lakers showed some initial interest in Lowry, but told his agent they were waiting on a decision from Anthony and James.

Stephenson received some initial interest, but they never followed up.

The Lakers showed no interest in Thomas, who signed a market favorable contract with the Phoenix Suns.

Kobe Considers Hometown Discounts As 'Big Coup' For Owners

Nov 22, 2014 1:34 PM

Kobe Bryant considers the public pressure for longtime players of a specific team to take less money, as Dirk Nowitzki has done with the Dallas Mavericks, as a "big coup" for NBA owners.

"It's the popular thing to do," Bryant said. "The player takes less, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I think it's a big coup for the owners to put players in situations where public perception puts pressure on them to take less money. Because if you don't, then you get criticized for it.

"It's absolutely brilliant, but I'm not going for it. I know the new head of the players' association ain't going for it, either."

Nowitzki signed with the Mavericks for $25 million over three years.

"I wanted to be on a good team," Nowitzki said. "I wanted to compete my last couple of years at the highest level. Ever since after the championship, we had a couple of rough years. We missed the playoffs one year, were the eighth seed twice I think, so that was really the main decision.

"I wanted to play at a high level my last couple years, and it kind of worked out with getting Parsons, with getting Tyson back here. We feel like we've got a good group, and hopefully we can make it work."

Lakers Plan Multiple Workouts For Gal Mekel, Dwight Buycks

Nov 20, 2014 2:21 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers plan to match up free agent point guards Gal Mekel and Dwight Buycks for consecutive workouts on Thursday and Friday, league sources told RealGM.

Both Mekel and Buycks remain on the available market after being waived and bought out, respectively. The Lakers remain fond of Ronnie Price, but the team has looked into wing and guard players this week.

RealGM first reported on Nov. 7 that Buycks had reached a buyout with Valencia in Spain and started discussions with the Lakers and Oklahoma City Thunder. The Lakers have also brought free agent forward Quincy Miller into Los Angeles for a workout.

Buycks, 25, averaged 3.1 points and 1.6 rebounds in 14 appearances for the Toronto Raptors last season. The 26-year-old Mekel averaged 2.4 points and two assists in 31 games for the Dallas Mavericks a season ago.

Nick Young: I Leave A Presence When I Walk Off Like Michael Jackson, Prince

Nov 20, 2014 12:16 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers are 2-0 this season with Nick Young in the lineup after starting the season 1-9 without him.

“I can’t take all of the credit. I can take some of it,” Young said. “It’s all about my swag. That’s a part of my repertoire.”

Young is averaging 16.5 points in 28.0 minutes over his first two games.

“I’m talking about how I just walk off. I leave a presence when I walk off. I’m like Michael Jackson, Prince, all them other guys.”
