Grizz dump Massenburg, pick up Batiste

Oct 31, 2002 6:53 AM

Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal reports: On Wednesday, the Grizzlies cut forward Tony Massenburg and claimed small forward Mike Batiste off waivers from the Los Angeles Clippers.

Batiste is expected  to join the team today. To make room on the roster, rookie center Robert Archibald was placed on the injured list.

The Griz saw an opportunity to add more perimeter scoring.

"He's a guy who can shoot the basketball and you never have too many shooters," Griz coach Sidney Lowe said. "It opens up things inside and it just gives you another weapon. He's also a big forward, and we're happy about that. . . . Sometimes you have to match up with teams when they go big. That's why we looked at possibly playing Drew at the three."

A native of Inglewood, Calif., Batiste averaged 14.4 points and 5.1 rebounds for the Clippers in eight preseason games. He scored 24 points in an Oct. 13 game against the Grizzlies.

With the waiving of Massenburg, Michael Dickerson and Stromile Swift are the only players remaining on the roster with ties to the francises Vancouver days.

Magic scouting report

Oct 18, 2002 10:45 PM

TONIGHT: Memphis Grizzlies, 8, The Pyramid in Memphis

PRESEASON RECORDS: Magic 2-2, Grizzlies 1-4.

BROADCAST: TV -- None. Radio -- 580 AM (WDBO) in Orlando; Spanish coverage on 1440 AM (WPRD).

MAGIC UPDATE: With every game, stars Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady are becoming more comfortable with each other. They had their best performance to date as a duo in Tuesday's 103-90 victory against New Orleans. Hill scored 15 points and McGrady 12, but there were many times when the two were perfectly in sync. As he progresses with his conditioning, the Magic are likely to increase Shawn Kemp's minutes. Kemp started Tuesday and scored eight points in 16 minutes. Horace Grant (left knee) and Steven Hunter (right knee) will not play.

GRIZZLIES UPDATE: Memphis has been getting long looks at newcomers Drew Gooden and Gordan Giricek this preseason. Both players are averaging more than 35 minutes per game. Gooden has been particularly impressive, averaging 19 points and 12 rebounds. Pau Gasol, last season's rookie of the year, has not played because he is resting a sprained wrist. Guard Michael Dickerson has been limited to one preseason game thus far as he recovers from a groin injury that kept him out of all but four games last season.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: It's another exhibition game, which means get the prominent players in, accomplish small goals and make sure they leave without injury.

Dickerson shows no signs of injury

Oct 7, 2002 8:42 AM

Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial-Appeal reports that Michael Dickerson is back and ready to play. After sitting out most of last season with a stress fracture near his right groin, Dickerson took court in the Grizzlies? public scrimmage on Sunday and immediately made an impact, scoring the games? first basket on a fast break layup.

"He looks good," center Lorenzen Wright said. "I didn?t think he?d look as good as he is. To me, it looks like he hasn?t even lost a step. He?s come back full throttle."

Nearly 11 months after suffering the season-ending injury, Dickerson is healthy enough to resume an NBA career. He is bigger, stronger and determined. "I just want to show myself that I can be better than I used to be," Dickerson, said.

Last year, Dickerson was concerned about his future in the NBA after suffering the rare injury. Something as simple as walking was a chore. So imagine the glee when Dickerson strolled into Grizzlies training camp with a bounce in his step. "He?s our starting two guard. He is a big piece to this team," Griz coach Sidney Lowe said. "He is someone we?re counting on, so it?s a big thing to have him back. He?s another scorer, another threat to open things up for Pau (Gasol) and Jason (Williams)."

Dickerson?s return will help the Grizzlies by adding another scorer to the mix and by allowing Shane Battier to slide to the front court. Dickerson?s injury forced Battier, a natural small forward, to log heavy minutes at shooting guard. The role not only called for Battier to create more offensively but to chase around explosive scorers on defense. Now Battier will be able to let the game come to him and won?t struggle against speedy two-guards on defense.

Dickerson Ready to Go

Oct 3, 2002 1:06 AM

Michael Dickerson went down with a groin injury nearly 11 months ago.  By the end of the season he was still hobbling around, and Grizzlies faithful were concerned if he would play again.

But Dickerson was at the opening day of the Grizz training camp and the Memphis Commercial-Appeal?s Ron Tillery reports that we was running at full speed.

Dickerson ran, jumped and shot the ball well. He didn?t seem hampered by the leg fracture that kept him out of all but four games last season.

One of the day's funniest moments happened when Dickerson playfully soared toward the rim as if to dunk over Lorenzen Wright.  Wright caught Dickerson in stride and gave him a boost well above the rim.
