Wright Demands Trade From Grizzlies

Jun 23, 2005 12:13 PM

Grizzlies forward/center Lorenzen Wright would prefer to stay in Memphis but with the Grizzlies looking to cut their payroll and unwilling to discuss a contract extension, he has demanded a trade from the team.

"Don't get this twisted. I want to be here," Wright said, shortly after his afternoon press conference began. "I love playing for the Grizzlies. I love being here. I would love for the Grizzlies to sign me. I would love to sign here and be a Grizzly for the rest of my life. But when we went to them about signing an extension they didn't give me a chance to say what I wanted. They just said that we're cutting costs and we're not doing any business deals.

"I wanted the chance to say will you give me $5 a day? But they said we're not doing anything. We're not going to do it now. We're not going to do it in sixth months. We'll talk after this season. So now I know that at the end of my contract I'm not going to be here. ... I don't see how I can feel good about playing for the Grizzlies when I know they're not going to sign me at the end of the year."

Wright is entering the final year of his contracted valued at $7.7 million.

If the Grizzles were to try and deal him, it would not be hard to move him after his good showing late last season and the fact that expiring contracts are very valuable.

Puerto Rico Making Bid For 2008 All-Star Game

Jun 12, 2005 3:12 PM

Angelo Medina, the man who is promoting the preseason game pitting the Miami Heat and Memphis Grizzlies next October, is setting his goals even higher for his native Peurto Rico.  With a new 18,000-seat arena, he would like to see the 2008 All-Star game come to San Juan.

"There is this idea to have the All-Star Game in Las Vegas (in 2007), which will be the first time that the All-Star Game would be held in a non-NBA city. And if it's going to happen there, why not in Puerto Rico?" said Arturo Nu?ez, vice president and managing director of NBA Latin America.

Medina would also like to see Puerto Rico get an NBA team sometime in the near future as well.

?Eazy-Weazy" Likely Done In Memphis

Jun 9, 2005 1:44 PM

After a breakthrough year with the Memphis Grizzlies, free agent point guard Earl Watson has expressed that he wants to play for a contender and likely will not stay in Memphis even if the Grizz try to re-sign him.

"I think free agency for me will be very interesting," Watson said from his Kansas City home. "I'm 25 (years old) and an unrestricted free agent. The thing is, I haven't had any contact with anybody from Memphis. I don't know what that means. I just want to thank the fans for embracing me as a young player coming from the West Coast when they really hadn't seen me play. I grew up in Memphis as an NBA player. It will always be a significant part of my life. I couldn't have asked for anything better."

Knicks Trying To Pry Gasol From Grizzlies

Jun 8, 2005 6:47 AM

According to a report in Tuesday's Memphis Commericial Appeal, recent reports that the Griz are willing to part with Gasol were overblown. The team still is committed to building around the Spaniard, barring a deal for a proven superstar such as Tim Duncan or Kevin Garnett. Gasol, despite his shortcomings, still elicits a double team when he touches the basketball.

He's been a consistent offensive player, having averaged nearly 20 points and 10 rebounds in each of his four NBA seasons. That is why the Grizzlies essentially laughed when the New York Knicks recently floated a nonsensical trade proposal down the Mississippi River: Gasol in exchange for Memphis native Anfernee Hardaway.
