Spain, Argentina Remain Undefeated

Aug 29, 2006 9:52 AM

Pau Gasol had 25 points and nine rebounds and Spain used another impressive performance to beat Lithuania 89-67 Tuesday and advance to the tournament's final four for the second time.

Spain (7-0) will play Friday against Argentina, who disposed of Turkey 83-58.  Andres Nocioni led the Argentinians with 21 points, including 6-for-7 from the field, and 6 rebounds.

"The team who beats us is the team that plays really well,'' Spain coach Pepu Hernandez said. "We know we can lose if we don't do the right job and be the team we have been until this moment. They can beat us, but it will be difficult."

Burks Continues To Weigh His Options

Aug 8, 2006 5:53 PM

Former Grizzlies guard Antonio Burks, a Memphis native, says four NBA teams have expressed interest in him. He acknowledges that the NBA's development league and Europe are among three options.

Yet the 6-foot point guard sounds convinced that he'll get a second chance to prove that his first NBA suitor was wrong.

The Grizzlies chose not to re-sign Burks after two seasons.

"But I know where I'm supposed to be," Burks said Monday. "I'll get back. I'm just waiting on those (other) teams to decide."

Burks played in 81 regular-season games over two seasons with the Grizzlies. He averaged 2.3 points, 1.3 assists and 9.7 minutes. Revered for his hard-nosed defense and end-to-end quickness, Burks eventually fell out of favor partly because of offensive struggles.

"I've been working out and I feel good about my game," Burks said. "I've got my jump shot falling again."

If no NBA team makes him an offer, Burks is more inclined to play in the D-League rather than travel overseas. He's not ruling anything out, though.

Gasol Optimistic, Wants Tournament To Start

Aug 2, 2006 1:48 PM

Memphis Grizzlies forward Pau Gasol is very excited about this incarnation of the Spanish basketball team and he is willing to take on the challenge of being the team's leader.

"I know there is more pressure and a greater responsibility on me than the others. It is a challenge to overcome it and to make sure it doesn't affect me," Gasol told a news conference on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old former Barcelona player became the first Spaniard to be included in the NBA All-Star squad in February.

Spain beat defending world champions Serbia & Montenegro 89-62 in a tournament in Alicante on Monday, but Gasol recognizes the side still have a long way to go.

"The team fills me with enthusiasm. I want the tournament to start as soon as possible because it is only there when we will be able to prove whether we deserve to end up among the medals or not," he added.
